What’s Left for Game of Thrones to Wrap up in Season 8?

Well, thank goodness football is back, filling the enormous void left in my soul by the conclusion of Game of Thrones season seven on HBO. If not for that, I think I’d be miserably hung up on the mythos of Westeros….still reading Reddit theories and trying to find any breadcrumb that would lead me to the next great fan theory. That said, it’s pretty clear that HBO is starting to tie up loose ends as we move towards the grand finale of this epic. But, we’re going to have to wait awhile for resolution. It sounds like Game of Thrones season eight won’t hit our screens until November of 2018 at the earliest. Most people say 2019.

Yikes – well, regardless there’s still a lot to settle and there are more than a few characters whose purpose seems to be unresolved as we approach the grand end game. But, I guarantee there’s some arcs you’ve forgotten about, as I needed the dark corners of the Internet to remind me myself. Just figured I’d share my research with y’all.

Arcs for HBO to wrap up in Game of Thrones Season 8

Can Westeros defend itself from the White Walkers? It’s obviously the biggest struggle remaining on the show. The Night King and his army of undead are heading South, first stop: Winterfell. Westeros will have to unite to eliminate the threat.

Jon and Dany – How are these two going to react to the fact that they are related and, last we saw, they were having some serious sex? Is this going to be a ‘happily ever after’ type of romance? Or, is there trouble in paradise/incest?

Jon Snow’s claim to the throne – At this point, it feels like just about anybody could end up on the damn Iron Throne by the conclusion of this thing. But, Jon has the most legitimate claim of anyone. The thing is, from what we know of Jon, he probably doesn’t even want it. So, who gets it?

Jaime and Cersei – It’s been a long running internet rumor that Jaime is going to kill Cersei. I’m still subscribing to that theory.

Cleganebowl – I was happy to see HBO nod to all of the forum crawlers out there and remind us that The Hound still wants a piece of Zombie Mountain’s ass. For a while there, it looked like it might not happen, but I took the confrontation as a tip of the cap. The brothers are going to end up in a war for the ages.

Tyrion being mopey – Everyone is freaking out over Tyrion’s sadness watching Jon get into Dany’s chambers and laying the Longclaw. Is he jealous? Is he secretly in love with Dany? Does he know that Cersei doesn’t intend to keep her word? Or, is he just afraid that love will cloud Dany’s judgement? Wait. And. See.

The Golden Company – So, in case you missed it, Euron Greyjoy went to get some sellswords to come back Cersei’s efforts. But, the big theory here is that he’ll actually come back with Daario Naharis who will either turn on Dany or will remain loyal and turn on Cersei. This isn’t something they spent a lot of time on last season, but has potentially huge ramifications in season eight.

Theon and Yara – Speaking of Euron, is Theon finally going to sack up, kill his uncle, and save his sister? Damn, they’re running out of time to redeem Theon.

The fate of Tormund and Beric – I’m thinking about rolling my eyes if neither of these guys died at The Wall. I mean, how could the possibly survive that?!?! Then again, Tormund is the shit, so I hope he shows back up.

The Catspaw Dagger – The little knife (aka a dagger) that Arya used to slash Littlefinger’s throat open with seems important. Remember, we saw it in a book Sam was reading back when he still wanted to be a Maester.

Ghost – Damn it, I don’t care about the CGI budget. Can we PLEASE get Jon’s direwolf, Ghost, back into the fray??

Melisandre – I think Mel’s involvement in the grand scheme of things is the most intriguing item left unresolved. She told Varys that she has to die in the West. She told Arya that they’d meet again. Yet, she’s just going to pack up her bags and head home? I don’t think so. But, even if she does want to join the cause, wouldn’t Jon have her killed? It’s like there’s no easy way out for her. There’s also this wild theory out there about Mel returning with an army of red priests and priestesses on the backs of dragons. Look that one up – it’s fun.

The “bittersweet” ending – George R.R. Martin has said that the ending of this saga is going to be “bittersweet.” Likely, that means something terrible is going to have to happen for something good to continue. I mean, that’s what bittersweet pretty much is. But, it doesn’t mean HBO is going to stick with it. We’ll see.

I’m sure I’m forgetting a ton of plot points, so if you got ’em, add ’em in the comments.
