The 2017 NFL season is just two weeks old, but so far the Tennessee Titans look like they’re heading in the right direction. The Seattle Seahawks, on the other hand, do not. The sample size is only two games, but those two games tell a pretty convincing story so far.
In week one, the Titans went for an onside kick to start the game against Oakland. They failed to convert, Derek Carr and company stormed the field, scored seven, and try as they might, the Titans just couldn’t get those seven points back. But, for the most part, once they settled into the game, they held their own against a Raiders team that is thinking Super Bowl. Last week, they demolished a Jaguars team that played admirably against the Houston Texans in week one. The arrow’s pointing up.
Meanwhile, the Seahawks are flat out struggling on offense. They’ve scored one touchdown so far this season, a Russell Wilson completion to Paul Richardson. They put up nine points against the Green Bay Packers, and beat the San Francisco 49ers, scoring just 12 points in victory. Wilson is currently 22nd in the NFL in passing yards and 25th in the NFL in passer rating. Folks…..that is not good.
But, even with all the stats aside, the Titans match up rather well against the Seahawks. Giving up the big play has been the Achilles heel of this defense for several seasons now, but the Seahawks haven’t shown that they have that capable playmaker on the roster yet. If anyone, it’s Doug Baldwin. So, the key to this game is going to be stopping the run. The Seahawks think they may have found their featured back in Chris Carson, but it’s imperative the Titans don’t let him get going and give the Seahawks offense any sort of control over this game. If they can stuff the run against a weak offensive line, they have the guys to cover Seattle’s receivers.
Now, with Russell Wilson under center, you never know. But, so far, he’s been running for his life. I expect more of the same on Sunday. Titans win a 21-17 type of game.
I teamed up with friend of the site, Big Game Paul, to talk all things Titans on this week’s still untitled SoBros Titans podcast. Check it out here:
