Movie Review Rewind: Saw V (2008)

These movies that involve torture and gore have run their course. The Saw franchise is very much the most successful horror film franchise in the past decade. And I have seen the four previous ones and actually enjoyed them all. Even the last installment was pretty good. It had a good ending and even made the third one better. So, I decided to go see this one and it will be the last time I see one in theaters. That I can say for sure. What has made this franchise successful is its twists and everything connecting in the end somehow. Well this formula is dead and cannot be found in this one. This franchise has lost its touch and should not continue. But of course it will because it still makes a ton of money.

I realize that these movies rely on shock value – not actual scare tactics. Saw movies go for the blood and guts, and really want to try to make you sick. And then the payoff is at the end when everything comes together. Most people will never forget the end of the first one. When Jigsaw gets up and walks right out the door. But we are far from those days. The two main male characters in this one are weak and you really do not care what they do. The story tries to take you back to the beginning, but it falls flat. It is everything you already know. There is no mystery to this plot. No twist that will shock you.

Like myself, a lot of people see it because it comes out close to Halloween or it gives you something to go see on the actual holiday. However, it is not worth it anymore. This fifth installment became boring and disappointing. You sit through the movie hoping you will get something out of it and you never do. The previews say “You won’t believe how it ends.” Well that is sort of true. You won’t believe how it ends and how much the end sucks.
