Hey guys!
Well, we made it through week nine, which means one thing: College Football Playoff rankings! On Tuesday night, the CFP Committee finally revealed the top four, and who is on the outside looking in. Predictably, the SEC filled the top two spots, with Notre Dame and Clemson taking the third and fourth spots.
Meanwhile, in the SEC, the conference continues to be top heavy. Outside of Georgia and Alabama (and a possible late surge by Auburn), there are no other hopes for the playoff. We’ve also had our first coaching change of the season (you know, if you don’t count Hugh Freeze)! With four weeks left, how is everyone stacked up? Let’s have a look. On to the rankings!
1. Georgia – And the Bulldogs have taken the top spot! This isn’t a dig at Alabama, but Georgia just has a bit of a better resume. I completely agreed with them being at #1 in the first ranking, as the Bulldogs have earned it. Coming off of The Cocktail Party and the demolition of Florida, the Bulldogs are rolling. They host South Carolina this weekend.
2. Alabama – Here’s where Nick Saban shines: going from not caring about rankings to convincing his team it’s an insult to be ranked second. The Tide comes off a bye week, and hosts LSU for a Saturday night showdown.
3. LSU – Another bye week team, the Tigers look to be rested when they head to Tuscaloosa Saturday night. (Author’s note: Bama/LSU should always be a night game)
4. Auburn – The Tigers enjoyed a bye week, but lost Kamryn Pettway for a few weeks. Now they head to Texas A&M without their lead back.
5. Mississippi State – Listen here Bulldogs, you need to make your mind up on what kind of team you want to be. You steamroll teams, get steamrolled, then come back firing. PICK. AN. IDENTITY. Seriously, it’s hard to keep up. After taking down A&M, they welcome UMass for another likely win.
6. Texas A&M – Oh look, Texas A&M lost at the end of October. Pardon me while I recover from the shock. The Aggies find themselves at #6 after a loss, because, well, have you seen the rest of the SEC? They need to find the momentum they had going before the welcome Auburn to town on Saturday.
7. South Carolina – Did anyone realize that the Gamecocks are 6-2? Because admittedly, I didn’t. South Carolina took down a struggling Vanderbilt and made themselves bowl eligible. Surprisingly, they are still in competition for the East. Unfortunately for the Gamecocks, they have to go through Georgia this weekend.
8. Kentucky – For the second time in 30+ years, the Wildcats defeated the Vols. Sure, it’s not as impressive this season, but I’ll give them a little credit. Besides, they’re bowl eligible and still in contention for the East! If they can defeat Ole Miss this weekend, Kentucky will be 7-2. In football.
9. Arkansas – Don’t let it get to your head Razorbacks. Honestly, you’re here at #9 for two reasons: 1. you came back from trailing 31-7. 2. The rest of the SEC is a dumpster fire. Arkansas hosts Coastal Carolina this weekend.
10. Missouri – I know, I know. Hear me out. Missouri has won TWO in a row! And honestly, that’s the only thing worth bragging about down here near the bottom. The Tigers host a limping Florida in a blackout game. Because of course they do.
11. Vanderbilt – I think it’s safe to say that the wheels have come off for the Commodores. So much potential, but nothing to show. They host Western Kentucky this weekend.
12. Ole Miss – You let Arkansas come back from a 24 point deficit to beat you. Not a powerhouse team, but Arkansas. Just……just go sit in the corner until you leave for Kentucky.
13. Florida – There’s not much worse than a three game skid, getting demolished by your main conference rival, and firing your coach.
14. Tennessee – Except, you know, going winless in the SEC, losing to a conference rival, and NOT firing your head coach.
Have a great week folks! Poppa Bear loves you.
