Shawn Michaels is one of the greatest wrestlers of all time. He was elected into the WWE Hall of Fame back in 2011 after a lengthy and prestigious career. “The Heartbreak Kid” has had four runs as WWE Champion, three runs as Intercontinental Champion, and one run as European Champion. He won the Royal Rumble twice, and has had six WWE Tag Team Championship reigns with partners such as Stone Cold Steve Austin, John Cena, Triple H, and Kevin Nash. But, his career was so much more than just the accolades.
Just looking at the eye test, the man was ‘Match of the Year’ factory. I still say his match with Bret Hart at Wrestlemania XII is the greatest wrestling match of all time. But, some of his work against Triple H, The Undertaker, Kurt Angle, and John Cena are among the best wrestling matches of his generation. Everything he touched turned to gold.
But, that’s not why we’re here today, folks. We’re here because a friend of the site passed this little nugget along to me and said, “Stoney – you ever see this thing?” No….no I haven’t. At the time thing thing was filmed, I don’t think I was allowed to watch grown-up shows such as Jenny Jones. Nevertheless, ol’ HBK was as electric as ever:
This is so funny, but there’s two main things that stand out to me.
First, this was obviously still during the time when people were essentially trying to figure pro wrestling out. The scripted nature of the WWE was just becoming public knowledge. So, I thought it was really interesting when homeboy asked Michaels if the fights were real. You could hear a genuine concern in his voice – like telling a kid that Santa Claus isn’t real. “Are the fights real?” – man, I remember those days. I remember hanging on every word, thinking, “JUST SAY YES OR NO!”
Second, got nothing but respect for the woman who takes the mic and just says, “I wanna touch his chest.” Like, you go girl – know what you want and take it. HBK was pretty generous with his chest, as women bombarded the stage to touch it. It makes me miss the days when I was in such good shape that I could walk around with only a leather vest covering my upper body. I had a pony tail, too. Listen, folks – in defense of Michaels’ fashion in this clip, that’s what pure sex looked like in the 1990s.
I’m going to go out on a limb and say that this clip alone could have gotten Michaels into the Hall of Fame. It’s definitely a Hall of Fame worthy clip.
