This week, the WWE announced that they would be honoring the late Fabulous Moolah at Wrestlemania 34 by having a battle royal named after her. The match will feature women from all of the WWE brands, and in my opinion, is an excellent way to get everyone on the show. The only problem?
The Fabulous Moolah was actually a pretty terrible person.
My jaw dropped when I saw the promo. I couldn’t believe that after some of the things Moolah did in her heyday, that the WWE would be so stupid to stamp her name on a match at the biggest show of the year. Furthermore, I shuddered hearing all of the current talent sing the praises of this woman as if she was some sort of saint.
Make no mistake about it – she was no pioneer. She was no revolutionary. Moolah did more to set back the prestige of women’s wrestling than she did to further it.
She pimped out underage women…
Moolah was notorious for sending the girls, often underage, at her camp to photo shoots with strangers. When they actually went out to wrestle, it was expected that they perform sexual favors for the promoters because promoters like sexual favors. But, the boys in the back had their rounds, too. It was a way of keeping the locker room in line instead of heading out and finding their way into trouble.
If one of the girls didn’t like it? Or, flat out refused? Well, she was forced. She was raped. It’s also been said that Moolah would actually get a lot of these women addicted to drugs to maintain control over them. Folks, this is basically human trafficking.
She trained the next generation to suck
Though the pimping and human trafficking was pretty egregious, Moolah also more directly hindered women’s wrestling. She was reportedly so afraid of losing her spot that she trained wrestlers to perform poorly so that no one was ever “as good” as her. Thing is, she really wasn’t all that good to begin with. So, that whole dry spell when women’s wrestling was virtually non-existent? You can thank Moolah for that because she actively tried to set back future generations.
She used her pull to rob talent
Pretty straightforward here – many have claimed Moolah was taking half the money promoters gave her to pay her talent and handing it off, pocketing the other half and telling the girls it was all the promoter gave her.
The Original Screwjob
Vince McMahon and Moolah deliberately collaborated in an effort to rob Wendi Richter of the Women’s Championship.
This is just a high level overview of this stuff to boot! Plenty of shoot interviews and former superstars that have come out publicly and supported a lot of this stuff. Thanks to the Internet, this stuff is pretty easy to find.
You can say all you want about “no credible sources” reporting on it. But, come on – there’s an awful lot of reputable sources that have come forward. There’s too much smoke for there not to be any fire in my opinion. If you want to read more about what a piece of shit she was, mosey on over to this Reddit thread. Fair warning – it’s a doozy.
