Money in the Bank (2018)

Money in the Bank (2018), the ninth edition of the Money in the Bank series, is an upcoming pay-per-view event of the WWE Network. The professional wrestingling matchup is scheduled to take place on 17th June 2018 at the Allstate Arena in Chicago in Rosemont, Illinois. The event will feature wrestlers from both the brands of WWE, SmackDown and Raw.

The event will also feature a women’s edition for the second time after it was introduced in 2017.

Match

The event consists of a single eponymous ladder match where eight contestants will wrestle each other with the objective of retrieving a briefcase, suspended 20 feet above the ring. The event will feature four wrestlers each from both WWE Raw and Smackdown.

Winnings

The briefcase contains a contract that enables the holder to cash it in for a WWE Championship or Universal Championship at any time and any place. The contract is valid for one year, and if the holder does not cash it within a year, it is declared void. Mr. Kennedy remains the only winner of Money in the Bank who did not cash in the contract.

The contract proves to be a trump card because of it’s any time, any place clause, it allows the holder to take advantage of the champion’s moment of weakness. This strategic use of the contract was popularized by Edge who challenged and defeated John Cena, after the latter had just finished a gruelling Elimination Chamber match and was barely able to defend himself.

History

The event was conceptualized by Chris Jericho in 2005. The first match was contested in WrestleMania 21, and was won by Edge. The event was specific to wrestlers of the RAW. The event was later made open to both the brands. Between 2010-13, there were two different Money in the Bank matches, for two brand specific contracts, while the 2017 edition was exclusive only to SmackDown wrestlers.

Qualifying

As of now four wrestlers have qualified, Braun Strowman, Finn Balor, The Miz and Rusev while the the others remain TBD. While for the women’s edition, only Ember Moon and Charlotte Flair have qualified.
