I don’t think goats get enough credit for being the sturdy animals that they are. If you own a farm, you know just how useful a good goat can be. I mean, I grew up with two goats…named one Sausage, and the other Biscuits. So, you can tell right off the bat that I really appreciate goats. Anyway, some big news out of the goat world today, as a ranch in Oregon has officially announced that they have trained goats to be goat caddies on their golf course.
Tucked away in the highlands of east Oregon, United States is Silvies Valley Ranch.
Built on working cattle and livestock, the ranch also has a luxury resort where customers can unwind at a day spa, horseback ride across the great outdoors or play on a seven-hole golf course.
But everything is not what it seems.
Behind the scenes, the ranch has been developing the world’s first professionally trained goat golf caddy. No kidding.
From July, guests at the ranch will be able to rent a goat to follow them around the McVeigh golf course, just like a human caddy. It’s a job that pays peanuts, literally, as the goat wears a custom-made “goat-golf bag” — designed by Oregon-based company Seamus Golf — to carry clubs, beverage cans and their favorite treats.
The ranch’s “goat training program” has schooled just four, with plans to double that number next season. The program’s most successful graduate is four-year-old Bruce LeGoat, the caddy master.
No need to patronize the goats by saying they’re paid in peanuts. But, that offensive, ostracizing slander aside, this is great news. But, I think it’s incredibly short-sighted.
There’s a miracle in here, folks. You just have to look for it.
We should train goats to do everything. Think about it – we’re automating everything at an increasingly alarming rate. But, what happens if the grid falls? What happens if we lose power? Who’s going to be there to pick up the slack?
That’s why our contingency plan for automation should be goats. I feel like you all came here for funnies, but we’ve stumbled into something much more important. This has been a learning experience, and I hope you’ve all been provoked to think by this.
