Maybe Quoting Too Short at a Meeting Isn’t the Best Play If You’re the MNPS Director?

Some big news to report on this week, and since we can’t break news because we have virtually no sources on any topic, we can only react to the news as it happens. That’s what pays the bills, folks – our abilities as analysts. Anyway, I don’t want to be labeled a stick in the mud, but I have no choice. All I can do is simply share my thoughts on this pressing matter. If you’re the Metro Nashville Schools Director, I can’t advise quoting rapper Too Short. Just seems like you aren’t really reading the room properly. Personally, I have no problem with it. But, I think you need to be a little more self-aware here.

In the latest – and certainly most unexpected – twist in the ongoing contretemps between Metro Nashville Schools Director Shawn Joseph and school board Vice Chair Jill Speering, a formal complaint has been filed related to Joseph’s use of a song by rapper Too Short during a meeting with the district’s principals.

Speering, who has become a frequent and vocal critic of Joseph during MNPS’s budget struggles, emailed a complaint to the district’s civil rights and federal programs coordinator Monday, saying that Joseph’s use of Too Short’s 2006 song “Blow The Whistle” was “highly offensive, reprehensible and inexcusable.”

This reads like the script of a Will Ferrell movie. Actually, are we sure this isn’t the plot for the sequel to The Campaign?

“I could not understand how this misogynistic song could be appropriate in ANY educational environment,” Speering wrote. “What kind of example does this set for principals, teachers and students?”

I hope that this song had such a profound affect on principals, teachers, and students that they showed up for school the next day ready to recreate a Three 6 Mafia music video.

Anyway, let’s perform a journalistic experiment. Let’s examine how bad these lyrics really are:

I go on and on
Can’t understand how I last so long
I must have super powers

Too Short is presumably talking about his desire to improve public education and the work he’s willing to put in to achieve it here. No gripes on my part.

Where you get that from?
Grab the mic, spit one, let me hit that blunt
Pimp-c, 8-ball, and Mjg
Keep spittin’ that p to the I-m-p
Bun-b that’s Texas baby
Ball and g that’s Memphis baby
$hort dog that’s Oakland baby
Ain’t nothin’ but pimpin’ these days g
My nigga c got locked up
But these real hoes still know they gots to fuck
Give a fuck nigga what you say
$hort dog fuck with Ugk
Do you really wanna be like me?
Spit game like snoop and tip
Pretty girls in the vip
They came with Dre they don’t need id
This verse is actually kind of inspiring. It’s nice to see a man acknowledge his colleagues and counterparts. Maybe this assembly of principals and board members could learn something about team-building from Too Short.
Your mind is gone
Your brain is blazed
You’ve been wide awake for the last 3 days
Poppin’ pills
It goes down for real
Don’t stop, just keep rollin’ down hill
Crash and burn, can’t stand, fall back
You’re doin’ too much you can’t handle all that
Too Short’s desire to help the kids is evident in this verse as well. Obviously, he’s discussing the consequences of not taking your education seriously and what happens to those who don’t see the end of their education.
Too $hort
Up all night baby
Album number sixteen
Y’all can’t fuck wit that
Okay, now this is just too far. Suddenly, I see why everyone was so uproarious in their disdain. Shame on you, Shawn Joseph. This is appalling.
