I’m Not on Board With New Nashville If It Means Spending $16 for a Damn Drink

New Nashville is something else, man. I can vividly remember the days when you didn’t go downtown. It was nothing but booze, drugs, sex, and crime.

Okay, I guess it’s still all of those things, but it’s fun now. Back then, it was threatening. Now, it’s all just a part of the party. But, Nashville is evolving past much more than a party town. There’s an enchanting food scene blossoming here, and the artisan cocktails are coming along with it, making for quite the expensive happy hour.

Inside the trendy, year-old Henley in Midtown, bartenders expertly craft drinks made with unusual ingredients like foie gras butter, barrel aged pineapple shrub, sprouted coconut and dandelion.

But all those fancy ingredients come with a high price tag.

The drink with the foie gras butter, which is combined with a rum aged seven years in ex-bourbon barrels, will cost you $16.

Just a few years ago, craft cocktails priced that high would have shocked Nashville diners, but $16 drinks have become commonplace in the city’s exploding food scene. Husk, Black Rabbit and Sunda are among the venues with $16 cocktails on their menus.

Yeah, it’s a no for me, dog.

New Nashville is fancy, y’all. And while this new scene can definitely come in handy on a date night when you’re trying for something new and exciting, it’s hard to imagine this being a sustainable thing for the regular joe’s like me.

I love hanging out at Pinewood Social every once in a while, but damn I thought that place was costly. If I pay $16 for a drink, then it better tickle my tummy and smooch on my gumdrops if you know what I mean.

Give me happy hour G&Ts all night on #GinFriday. Some black walnut Old Fashioneds out at The Goat. Hell, just pour a pitcher of Bud Light and I’ll be good.

Point is, I don’t need lavender goat cheese and pineapple au jus with my whiskey to enjoy it. You bars can’t stop paying so much for exquisite ingredients and driving up the prices.

PS. I decided to be an effective and adequate journalist for this piece, and took to Twitter to help solve this mystery:

Sure looks like the Bud Light is winning to me.

But, in all seriousness, if the city’s happy then I’m happy. Obviously, people are willingly paying for these expensive drinks, so if the bars can make the money and keep a healthy economy booming, then by all means, don’t let one measly little dick joke blogger stop the fun.
