Titans Poised for a Breakout in 2018

A lot of folks would probably consider the 2017 Tennessee Titans as a breakout team in its own right. But, despite making the playoffs, and despite going on the road and beating a talented Kansas City Chiefs team, there’s still plenty of room for improvement. If this franchise wants to take the next step, they’re going to need a few more Kevin Byards to step up and put the league on notice.

Titans Breakout Players 2018

I’m a nicely organized guy, so we’re going to nicely break this mid-June football article into two sections. I’m looking at guys on both offense and defense, so this should really help our SEO.

Offense

Corey Davis is the obvious choice here, and for good reason. Injuries hampered his rookie season, but he still has all of the physical tools to become a true #1 receiver in the NFL. Plus, another NFL offseason under his belt should help, despite switching offensive systems. He’s expected to take the next step in 2018.

But, I’m actually looking at a guy like Taywan Taylor. If Davis develops as expected, and commands attention from opposing defenses, and if Rishard Matthews continues to be his reliable self, there’s an opportunity for Taylor to steal some serious yardage. Oh, and don’t forget – we don’t have to worry about Terry Robiskie calling a jet sweep to Taylor every five plays in 2018.

As for Marcus Mariota – meh…it depends. Kinda felt like 2016 was his breakout year. But, if you believe Dan Orlovsky, this first little bit with Matt LaFleur could be challenging for the young quarterback.

Defense

On defense, it’s all about Adoreé Jackson. The former USC Trojan got better and better each week to close the season, and finished in the top five PFF-graded rookie cornerbacks. He figures to start opposite Malcolm Butler, with Logan Ryan lining up in the slot, and should progress nicely in the role. The guy’s a play-maker and could be the next Byard on this defense.

Jayon Brown quietly had a solid rookie season. He’s an excellent cover linebacker and has great speed. But, people don’t talk about his tackling ability enough. He may be seen as somewhat of a specialist, but I think there’s definitely an opportunity for an expanded role.

The opening at nose tackle could benefit Austin Johnson if he’s able to step up and claim the spot. But, I imagine they’ll employ a rotation. That could make it hard for any one dude not named Jurrell Casey to stand out, though.

What do you say, Titans fans? Who are you keeping an eye on to break out in 2018?
