No issues with the top five there. For the most part, I think the fine folks at Madden nailed it with the elite tier of NFL quarterbacks. Bravo! And, really – it’s not even the fact that Mariota is graded at a 79 that I take issue with.
It’s having him below guys like Jameis Winston, Tyrod Taylor, and Blake Bortles that I’m calling bullshit on. Blake Bortles!?! BLAKE!?!?! BORTLES!?!?!
If you’re starting a franchise in the NFL right now, and you have the choice to take Bortles, Taylor, or Mariota, who are you taking?!?! If the answer is anyone other than Mariota, then I don’t trust your football judgment.
You know who else Mariota is behind? Baker Mayfield….a kid who hasn’t played a single snap in the NFL. Again, I ask, would you truly take him over Mariota at this point? I don’t know – I would think a lot of folks would rather have Mariota.
Look, I get it – I’m not going to sit here and act like Mariota has unequivocally established himself as a top flight NFL quarterback. He’s been injured quite a bit, and he hasn’t exactly produced eye-popping stats. When you have the first few seasons he’s had, you’re going to have the national media slapping the ‘injury prone’ label on you.
But, let’s not let that guide our judgment on the guy. Just look at the eye test – he’s still a damn good quarterback, and I have faith that new OC Matt LaFleur’s system is going to allow this guy to flourish.
Personally, I would put him somewhere between Jared Goff and Case Keenum. But, I don’t think he’s going to be among the bottom tier of quarterbacks this time next year.
