A week ago today was the start of the famed SCI weekend in Chattanooga. I can’t believe it’s been a week, but it has peeps. SCI weekend is more like a big family reunion interlaced with awesome wrestling. But, I’ve got to say you haven’t really lived until you’ve taken in that view of Speedway and Wendy’s from the Best Western in Chatt-town. But, before I could take in all the sights, I had the Thursday Bandit show in Knoxville to attend AND would be working commentary for Resolute in Crossville on Friday….I was ready for a jam packed weekend, y’all.
Thursday
I headed out of Cookeville with my Resolute broadcast partner, Parker, as we were not going to miss the opportunity to support our guy Brett Ison wreaking havoc in Bandit. We arrived to an intimate setting at the D1 Training Facility. After a short wait, we snagged a couple of seats at ringside. Fite TV was in-house to record and, I’ve gotta say, I thought they did a great job streamlining the event.
The prelim tournament matches were all pretty good with Brett/Byff/Cash Flo being THE match to search out. Ethan Page (known by the Bandit crowd as Spider-Man), Clayton Gainz with Dave Crist, Ison and Daniel Eads all moved on to the second round. Page/Gainz was solid with Page getting the win. Ison dominated Eads before Uncle Byff showed up to distract The Pitbull leading to an Eads dub. In the main event, Eads got the upset and took home the Bandit Heavyweight Championship by defeating (with some help) Devin Driscoll and Page. The show also had Rob Killroy, Cheeseburger and Teddy King in a triple threat banger and a surprise match between Tough Guy Inc. and The Gym Nasty Boys (which was a lot of fun) All in all, it was a pretty fun show with my only negatives being we didn’t get to see Ison/Irie (nitpicking) and the obnoxious drunk dudes in the crowd. Don’t get me wrong. I love a feisty crowd but there were more than a couple of families in the crowd. So, maybe openly drinking Busch Light and calling the talent a bunch of “fucking pussies” isn’t the best look.
Friday
It was Resolute day, peeps. Resolute Wrestling is a small promotion I work with out of Crossville, TN and the Friday of SCI weekend means it’s Summer Sizzler time for us. This is kind of like our WrestleMania so we usually go big. This year, we had Menace, Cheeseburger, Tracy Smothers, Ryan Nova and Tough Guy Inc. coming in for a packed house. Cheeseburger and Caleb Courageous put on a show, The Death Dealers (Ison and ‘Slick’ Willie Brewer) acquired the Resolute Tag Titles after a crazy elimination match that ended with the Dealers and the Tough Guys squaring off, and I got to call a Tracy Smothers match. The MOTN has to go to Jeremiah Plunkett vs. Alex Zayne and it may not be close. I know Plunkett is a name a lot of y’all know, but if this is the first time you’re hearing about Zayne, look him up. These guys beat the hell out of each other all over the venue with JP taking a power bomb AND a taco driver.
Saturday
It was finally time to head down to Chattanooga. We met up with the rest of the SoBros just as they were sitting down for a little podcast action along with Righteous Jesse and Plain Ol Lane. We talked wrestling and VHS tapes before heading down to The City Cafe for cakes and pies. The Oreo cake and Coca Cola cake were both heavenly. The rest of the crew needed a break before showtime, so the wife and I made the yearly trek to McKay’s. I spent $12 on wrestling DVDs (including The Best of: In Your House) whereas Haley found a veterinary book on horses from like the 80’s (she’s not that creepy, just getting ready for vet school). After all this, is was finally time for SCI Night 2 and what a night it would be.
We were blessed with Joey Lynch/PCO which may be a legit MOTY contender. I got to meet Nick “Fucking” Gage which was beyond cool for me. Gary Jay and Jake Parnell fought for our entertainment. AJ Gray and Fred Yehi tore it the fuck up. We got to see Marko Stunt used as a weapon by Cyrus The Destroyer in the Scramble. THEN we were blessed with the batshit Finals. Lynch beats PCO earlier in the night, then secures the pin on all three opponents in the final. What a day, Mr. Lynch. Post-show, we snagged a couple of classy hats from Mance Warner and Marko before kicking back with a few cocktails above the Best Western pool.
Sunday
SCI weekend doesn’t end until we’ve survived #SUPsunday. That’s law. The crew headed back to our Nashville stomping grounds feeling it physically, but the spirit was still wanting. After a couple of drinks at The Crying Wolf, we headed towards The Basement East ready for whatever the psychos at Southern Underground Pro had in store for us or so we thought. What transpired was one of the craziest shows I’ve ever been to. This show had a match end via dick pic, a (slight) water boarding, and Ol’ Mancer taking the show hostage (albeit for a short time) at knife point. If you missed the show go read our recap right meow.
Matches of the Weekend
- Joey Lynch vs. PCO (SCI Night 2)
- Kerry Awful vs. O’Shay Edwards (SUP)
- Jeremiah Plunkett vs. Alex Zayne (Resolute)
- Brett Ison vs. Uncle Byff vs. Cash Flo (Bandit)
- Joey Lynch vs. Fred Yehi vs. Gary Jay vs. Corey Hollis (SCI Night 2)
- Rob Killjoy vs. Cheeseburger vs. Teddy King (Bandit)
- SUPer Scramble (SUP)
Weekend MVP: Joey Lynch
Lynch beats Curt Stallion, PCO, Yehi, Jay, and Corey Hollis at SCI then heads to Nashville for the SUPer Scramble where he nearly left with the PWF Heavyweight Championship. Super impressive weekend and we at SoBros want to throw another shout out his way for all he did this weekend.
I want to add that Nick Gage got some MVP votes for doing the damn thing at a family friendly show over the weekend. Gage kicked it at SCI Prom and had grade school cheerleaders chanting MDK. No question that he’s the King.
Finally, big ups to Ison for being apart of the show-stealer at Bandit, winning gold over the Tough Guys at Resolute then shutting The Circus lights out at SUP before starting a war with Tennessee wrestling as a whole.
