After fending off a gunman at a Waffle House in Antioch back in the Spring, James Shaw Jr. is still out there campaigning to make the Nashville community a safer, less violent place. About a week ago, WSMV caught up with Shaw to talk about his next move in the community.

Shaw is hosting “Come Together Day” at Tennessee State University on Sunday, August 26th from 2:00 to 8:00 PM. The event will include an anti-violence rally, along with fun and games meant to bring all walks of life together.

“The shootings that we’ve had in Nashville are through the roof,” Shaw said. “I want everybody to come together and I want to try and think of a resolution.”

It’s crazy. I mean, I spoke with one of our buddies in the Nashville media last week and they mentioned that they’ve been “so busy with all the shootings” over the last couple of weeks. Let that sink in for a minute. “All the shootings” referencing our own beloved Nashville, Tennessee. It’s sad, but as the city continues to grow, so to will the pains that plague all other big cities.

Still, for a guy who’s lived in Nashville his entire life, to say this recent trend is disheartening would be an understatement. But, Shaw is out there using the platform he has to keep raising awareness and increase participation in these anti-violence rally.

“Come Together Day” will also be the launch of the James Shaw Jr. Foundation.

The purpose of the James Shaw Jr. Foundation (JSJF), is to raise awareness and take action around public issues stemming from mass community violence. JSJF works to reduce violence (including, but not limited to gun violence, social violence and economic violence) by addressing mental and social health issues before tragedy occurs.

It’s a tall task. Mainly, because there are a lot of contributing factors to general violence. But, just getting out there and having these difficult conversations is a certain step in the right direction. We’ll continue to commend Shaw for his heroic actions and his continued campaign to see this community grow and learn. Hats off, sir!
