Old Dogs is a movie that you have seen before. Sometimes that is a bad thing, but not all the time. This movie has funny parts and if you’re a fan of John Travolta and Robin Williams, then you will have no complaints. It is not their greatest work by any means, but they are having fun. However, I say it’s a movie you have seen before because it is very predictable and the mischief that Travolta and Williams get into will not take anyone by surprise.
Dan (Williams) and Charlie (Travolta) are sports marketing kings, and they live a pretty good life. Dan is a divorcee and has had his trouble with love and Charlie is a bachelor who cannot help but have wandering eyes for every woman he comes in contact with. But, Dan’s world is turned on its head when a woman from his past reveals he is the father of twins.
The rest of the movie is about how Dan can handle his new role of being a dad. Not only being able to handle his kids but getting to know them as well. Dan has to balance his family with his career. And he calls upon Charlie to help him out so they can seal the biggest deal of their careers. This leads to scenes involving Joker smiles, getting hit in the nuts, getting medicines mixed up, and everything in between. Some of these are funny and others are not.
Old Dogs is nothing new and most of us have a good idea of what we are going to see before the movie begins. As the audience, we know what to expect. This movie is family friendly and most of Travolta’s family is actually in it. His wife, Kelly Preston, plays the girlfriend from the past who lets Dan know he is a father. And Dan’s daughter is John Travolta’s real-life daughter, Ella Bleu.
Matt Dillon, Justin Long, and Rita Wilson (Tom Hank’s wife) round out the cast, but they really add nothing to the movie. It’s Travolta and Williams who try to be everything in this movie and it works part of the time. It does not require you to think and it gets some cheap laughs. Most importantly, this movie is for the entire family and that counts for something.
