We’re already four games deep in the 2018 season – SMDH. My, how time flies. Anyway, let’s review the NFL MVP race at the quarter season mark….
Quarter Season NFL MVP Candidates
Ezekiel Elliott – He’s first in the NFL in rushing by a whopping 88 yards, with 426 on the season (averaging 106.5 yards per game). If we’re looking at value in the MVP discussion, no one person may mean as much to his team as Elliott does to the Dallas Cowboys.
Jared Goff – The Rams signal caller has a completion percentage of 78.1% over the last three games. His 1,406 passing yards are only behind Ben Roethlisberger, and his 11 touchdowns are tied for 2nd. At 127.3, he is the highest rated passer in the NFL. Oh, and his team is 4-0 and clearly looks like the best in the entire league right now.
Todd Gurley – I’m not going to argue with Tom Brady getting last year’s award, but I do think Gurley made a strong case for it. This year, it’s not much different – Gurley is 2nd in the NFL in rushing with 338 yards. But, if you tack on his 194 receiving yards, he’s amassed 532 total yards of offense, with six total touchdowns on the season. He is one of the most lethal all-around weapons in the NFL.
Julio Jones – The Falcons receiver is on pace for 2,008 receiving yards with 502 already. But, that thing that haunted him last season? Three total touchdowns on the year? Yeah, he currently has a big fat doughnut for 2018.
Alvin Kamara – Kamara is the preeminent “Swiss Army knife” in the NFL. He can do it all – 275 yards rushing with five touchdowns, 35 receptions (including a 15-catch game against the Atlanta Falcons) for 336 yards and a touchdown. It sure looks like he’s in a position to become the key cog in the New Orleans Saints, and that’s a bold statement considering who’s been under center there for the last 12 years.
Khalil Mack – It is hard to describe how stupid the Oakland Raiders were for trading this guy to the Chicago Bears, but the Bears are absolutely ecstatic to have him. He’s my front runner for ‘Defensive Player of the Year’ with five sacks, two passes deflected, four forced fumbles, and an interception that went for a touchdown. He is an absolutely monstrous force on defense and has the power to completely take over a game.
Patrick Mahomes – The Chiefs gunslinger was named AFC Offensive Player of the Month and is on pace for 60 total touchdowns (LOL RIDICULOUS). He has 1,200 passing yards, and an NFL best 14 passing touchdowns (with an additional score on the ground). Plus, he has yet to throw an interception. But, it’s not just the stats that pop. It’s also Showtime Mahomes’ ability to take over a game that comes into play. That was a gritty, MVP-type of performance in Monday night’s comeback against the Denver Broncos. This kid looks like the truth.
So, here’s how I got ’em so far…
