I swore I wouldn’t do this column anymore. No one read it last year – seriously, I would get maybe 20 hits on a good week. After that, I said, “there’s no point in doing these anymore,” and I canceled the column. Well…I couldn’t keep it at bay any longer…I’ve decided to resurrect the beast. Luck be a lady tonight and that’s showbiz, baby. LFG.
Two years ago, I painted a pretty clear picture of why college football needs an eight-team playoff. I stand by that argument – eight is the way…no more, no less. So, I’ve started a new weekly column looking at what the College Football Playoff would look like under my format. I think it’s a reasonable way to determine a National Champion without leaving deserving candidates out, but making sure everyone has an equal chance to get in. With that said, let’s dive right in to my weekly College Football Playoff projections…
So, this is it – this is what the playoff teams would look like for 2018 under my format…
BIG NATURAL’S COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF PROJECTIONS
1. Alabama Crimson Tide (SEC Champion) – Auburn kept the first half of the Iron Bowl interesting, but after that, it was business as usual for the Tide. Now, they find themselves one more win away from a fifth straight trip to the CFP.
2. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (Wild Card #1) – I know Irish fans are probably sweating this conference championship weekend, but I don’t think there’s any way they miss the CFP. At this point, they look like the clear cut #2 team in the country. Quit sayin’ they ain’t play nobody.
3. Clemson Tigers (ACC Champion) – Clemson took care of business during the regular season. I expect they’ll roll over Pitt in the ACC Championship. It’s cruise control to the CFP for the Tigers.
4. Oklahoma Sooners (Big 12 Champion) – Ahhhh, here we are. The 4th spot – the same spot we’re debating every single year because the CFP is still sitting at four teams. Nonetheless, I think there’s a good chance that the loser of the SEC Championship is out of the CFP, and the Sooners just flat out have a better body of work than Ohio State. Yeah, they had a dud against Army, but they still won, and if they can get retribution against Texas, all’s gravy.
5. Ohio State Buckeyes (Big Ten Champion) – I’ll eat my fucking crow, Mose. You were fucking right about fucking Michigan, damn it. But, if anyone is buying that Ohio State should be in the playoffs ahead of Oklahoma, you’re crazy. At least Oklahoma has been consistent. We just gonna act like the Buckeyes didn’t struggle against Nebraska, nearly get upset by Maryland, and get their buttholes wallered out by 6-6 Purdue? Nah – these dudes don’t belong.
6. Washington Huskies (Pac 12 Champion) – WELP…no Rose Bowl for Mike Leach. The college football world is worse off for it, too. But, nonetheless, Cougs gonna Cougs. The Huskies take over as the favorites to win the Pac-12.
7. Georgia Bulldogs (Wild Card #2) – Well, well, well – here we are. It’s the game Bulldogs fans have been waiting for since January. The Alabama-Georgia rematch, and it’s for the SEC Championship. In my opinion, it’s for all the marbles. Or….at least some of the marbles….it’s for a playoff spot.
8. UCF Golden Knights (Group of Five Representative) – *Sigh* Damn it, Utah State. This was not a good weekend for my takes for sure. MEH. Here we are.
So, that gives us…
(8) UCF at (1) Alabama
(5) Ohio State at (4) Oklahoma
(7) Georgia at (2) Notre Dame
(6) Washington at (3) Clemson
Real Talk
Lets put politics aside and just take the four best teams in college football. Who would those four teams be? I’d say:
1. Alabama
2. Notre Dame
3. Georgia
4. Clemson
