The Mad Hatter is back folks!
The Kansas Jayhawks have officially names Les Miles as head coach of their struggling football program after announcing that David Beaty would not return. Miles was head coach of the LSU Tigers before being fired midway through the 2016 season. He racked up 114 wins in his tenure, highlighted by a National Championship in 2007. Miles earned his “Mad Hatter” moniker with his unorthodox coaching strategies, fake punts, fake field goals, and wild trick plays. He also ate grass straight from the field….
Ok, maybe he was just batshit crazy, but you get the point.
Miles was relieved of his coaching duties after LSU grew fairly stale on offense and failed to compete in the SEC West. Many point to Miles being unable to develop quarterbacks and refusing to evolve his offense around the strength of his players. On the flip side, Kansas is hoping to capitalize on his excellent track record in recruiting. Rebuilding the Jayhawks from the bottom step of the Big 12 will be no easy task, as convincing elite talent to come to Kansas should be difficult. The Jayhawks have not finished with more than three wins in a season since 2007. Yikes. This kind of dismal performance has made Kansas look to the Mad Hatter.
And I couldn’t be happier.
College football needs Les Miles. It feels like we lost a lot of college football’s best personalities in a hurry, specifically guys like Miles and Steve Spurrier (thank God we still have Mike Leach. The man is a treasure). Kansas could use a little madness. And we’re all better off for it.
Welcome back Coach.
