Another SUP Sunday from The Basement East is in the books. This time, it was I Am King bringing a tremendous card to East Nasty right here in the Music City. As usual, the SoBros Network team was on hand for all the action, so let’s dig right into the updated edition of the SUP Power Rankings!
(Editor’s note: shout out to Justin Summers from Wrestling Cheers – not only for snapping the featured image to this article, but for being a standup dude. Happy to meet in person this weekend, and can definitely say the wrestling media landscape is better because of guys like him.)
(Editor’s note: how does the Editor’s note work if you’re the Editor writing the Editor’s note in your own work?)
Okay – now, let’s hit the who’s who of the Southern Underground Pro ranks.
Honorable Mentions
Our biggest dropper on this edition of the rankings is Warhorse Jake Parnell, who dropped all the way from #4 to off the list completely. Parnell was emerging as a legitimate contender for the Bonestorm Championship before Teddy King pulled the rug right out from under him on Sunday.
It was nice to see Marko Stunt back in a SUP ring, though he was unable to compete. Nonetheless, a positive force that everyone was happy to see!
In losing efforts, Savanna Stone and Stokely Hathaway both looked impressive. For Stone, the pressure was massive, but didn’t seem to overwhelm her. Imagine – your SUP debut against one of the foundational members of the promotion in the biggest show they’ve had yet. Still, the bright lights didn’t seem to intimidate her and she very well held her own against Allie Kat. As for Big Stoke – maybe he should’ve spent less time jawing about Mr. Brickster’s reality TV past and focused on the actual sport of professional wrestling.
Finally, shout out to Graham Bell for using a fucking bazooka in a wrestling ring in 2019.
SUP Power Rankings
10. One Called Manders – I gotta say – Gary Jay was the odds-on favorite to win, and Manders literally lifted him over his head with one hand. Winning a scramble match that featured such SUP mainstays as Joshua Bishop, Danny Adams, and Jaden Newman shouldn’t be overlooked. Not to mention, he went face to face with a BAZOOKA and still managed to get the win. I said it on Twitter yesterday and I stand by it – perhaps the most impressive SUP debut ever.
9. Mance Warner – Ol’ Mancer needed a big win in SUP to get back into the power rankings, and he got just that when he and Cabana Man Dan defeated The Production. The only reason his partner is ranked ahead of him is because he hasn’t had a big win in SUP since submitting Ethan Page way back in April. The Southern Psycho is on the rebound.
8. Cabana Man Dan – Good for Cabana Man Dan. He’s become one of the most popular wrestlers in SUP, but he’s also starting to accumulate the wins it takes to become a bona fide contender. He and Ol’ Mancer should be a force in the SUP Tag Team Championship Tournament.
7. Allie Kat – Allie Kat is now undefeated in women’s matches at SUP with a 2-0 record against Samantha Heights and Stone. Don’t look now, but she’s also 3-1 in her last four matches…the only loss coming in the Trick or Treat Battle Royal. She hasn’t been pinned in SUP since Tripp Cassidy beat her at Streets of Hate last June.
6. Craig Mitchell – A win is a win is a win. No matter how much the fans chants “FUCK YOU CRAIG,” you have to give the devil his due. He scored a dramatic win over Rockin Rivera. The true identity of STAB is still a mystery, but you have to give Mitchell credit for getting in the ring against what was essentially a mystery opponent, with no time to prepare or game plan, and getting the win.
5. Mr. Brickster – Brick has come a long way since the spring of 2018, and now he has a signature win under his belt. Beating Big Stoke and then asserting himself in the fight against Brett Ison and Sadkampf at the end of the show has him rising the SUP ranks this month.
4. Teddy King – The Varsity Athlete is our biggest climber in the power rankings from November. But, through nefarious means or not, you have to give him credit for a huge win over Parnell. Now, with Manders and JV Newman in tow, King could become a legitimate force in SUP. The SUP faithful can’t be excited about the prospects of that, given the vitriol they routinely spew towards King.
3. O’Shay Edwards – Dr. Dan proved little more than a tune-up for Edwards, as The Big Bad Kaiju continues his impressive singles run in SUP. It’s clear that Edwards has his sights set on the Bonestorm Championship, given how Sunday’s show ended.
2. Sadkampf – Dominic Garrini and Kevin Ku continue to impress as a tag team, getting a big win over The Jollyville Fuck Its. Based on the landscape of SUP’s Tag Team Championship tournament, you’d have to consider Sadkampf the favorites to win it all at this point.
1. Brett Ison – Business as usual for The Strong Style Pitbull. Ison’s victory over Nick Gage was the single most impressive win in SUP history. That’s coming off the heels of a tremendous undefeated year in 2018. If there was any doubt before, it was all removed on Sunday. Ison’s the #TopGuy in SUP to kick off 2019.
