Movie Review Rewind: He’s Just Not That Into You (2009)

It’s been awhile since a movie has had such a talented cast, only to waste it all away. He’s Just Not That Into You is not really a romantic comedy. For one, the movie is not that funny, but that’s okay because it doesn’t have to be. However, it should have a good story, and in this case a good story about relationships and how they work today. But it does not. It focuses on the difficulties of a relationship, but never can capitalize on it.

The movie is all about dating and forming relationships. Director
Ken Kwapis focuses on a group of interconnected people who live in Baltimore and are either looking for love or wanting to keep it. We hear about MySpace, e-mails, text messages, and all other kinds of technology that have entered our lives and how they affect a relationship and communication. One thing I admire about this movie is that it focuses on real things about relationships. There are times when the guys are actually not interested at all. Or the girls for that matter.

But He’s Just Not That Into You makes it all one-sided – it’s about how guys treat girls like crap and girls take it. Now we all know that is not the case in the real world. The story misses the big picture because they have so many subplots, and the filmmaker’s attention is so divided. The movie is over two hours long. More than enough time to tell all sides of a few scenarios. Instead, it goes in circles and ends up the way you thought it would. We just took the longest possible way there.

The cast features Jennifer Aniston, Ben Affleck, Drew Barrymore, Justin Long, Kevin Connolly, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Connelly, and Scarlett Johansson. However, most of these talent does not affect the story at all and have just a handful of scenes. There is just too much going on with too many people. Ginnifer Goodwin is the only one whose character is funny, but you feel sorry for her as well. Her performance is the only breath of fresh air. All the others come across as non-important characters who are just running around in circles falling in and out of love too many times to give a shit about.
