SUP (Southern Underground Pro) returned to The Basement East on 3/3/19 for ‘What Could Possibly Go Right?’ As usual, your SoBros were on the scene, pregaming at The Crying Wolf, enjoying the show, and then scarfing down some pad thai afterwards. Seriously, nothing beats #SUPSunday.
Mose has a tremendous recap of the show here, along with a hell of an interview with The One Called Manders here. As for my general thoughts on the show as a whole, I think in a match-for-match sense, this was probably one of their best shows yet. I think there are reasonably 3-5 matches on the card that could end up in our discussion for ‘SUP Match of the Year’ 2019. Now, let’s hit the SUP Power Rankings.
Honorable Mentions
Logan Stunt won a frenetic scramble match that featured a wealth of new talent in The Basement East. That made for a nice moment with brother, Marko Stunt, after the match. We’ll have to see what happens from here, but a 1-0 start in SUP definitely earns a tip of the cap.
Also, I’m splitting Sadkampf up on this edition of the SUP Power Rankings because both guys were in singles action on this show. I still say they have to be the preeminent favorites to win the inaugural SUP Tag Team Championship.
Craig Mitchell and Mance Warner missed action at ‘What Could Possibly Go Right?’ But, both guys were on a roll previously, so it bears keeping an eye on ’em when they return.
In losing efforts, I thought Kerry Awful and Jaden Newman both looked great. Awful had the tall task of stopping the seemingly unstoppable Manders, while Newman put up a hell of a showing against A.C. Mack. In fact, I’d go as far as to say that Newman stole the show last Sunday. Between the match itself, and standing up to Manders, it appears Newman may have turned a corner in SUP. One of Tennessee’s up and comers’ star is rising.
SUP Power Rankings
10. Cabana Man Dan – Dan’s going to slip a little bit on this edition of the SUP Power Rankings by virtue of a loss. But, coming off of a HUGE busy weekend, it’s hard to hold it against him too much. Plus, he still looked pretty damn good against The Bone Collector.
9. A.C. Mack – It’s hard to say whether the Action Wrestling Champion will stick around in SUP or not, but his debut win over Newman was impressive.
8. The One Called Manders – The Cornbelt Cowboy is now 2-0 in SUP after winning a scramble match loaded with SUP mainstays and then defeating ‘The Heart and Soul of Tennessee Wrestling’ last Sunday.
7. Kevin Ku – A loss is a loss is a loss. Ku has routinely been the workhorse of SUP, and is as talented as they come. But, I can’t, in good conscience, rank him any higher than #7 after such a big loss.
6. Nick Iggy – Iggy is back in the top 10 after a phenomenal outing against the debuting James Bandy. It was billed as the co-main event and absolutely delivered. I’m curious to see whether Iggy and Awful will return to tag team action or continue singles runs for the time being. If that’s the case, they could both be names to watch for Bonestorm Championship contention.
5. O’Shay Edwards – It’s hard to bump Edwards down too far given the circumstances of his leaving Nashville without the Bonestorm Championship. That’s not going to completely undo the work he put in to get the opportunity to begin with. I think this beef with The Pitbull is far from over.
4. Dominic Garrini – Big time win over Cabana Man Dan in what I called the ‘Match of the Night.’ The Bone Collector looked as good as he did when he was regularly defending the Bonestorm Championship.
3. Mr. Brickster – Who would’ve thought that Brick would’ve risen this highly within a year’s time? Something about his glowing personality just resonates with people, but we can no longer ignore the fact that he’s flat out getting it done in the ring. He now has victories over superstars Stokely Hathaway and Faye Jackson in back-to-back shows, and he’s heading to Jersey City for WrestleMania week. Sooner or later, if he keeps winning, he’s going to force himself into championship contention discussions.
2. Allie Kat – She’s our highest riser on the SUP Power Rankings from January. Mose and I said on a recent episode of Checks and Championships that this bout with Ku should end up being a de facto #1 contender’s match, given the year that both of these competitors have had in SUP. And, I say it’s time to pull the trigger. BodyKat has earned it. She got a hard fought win over Ku in what was Mose’s ‘Match of the Night.’
1.Brett Ison – The king stay the king, baby. When you’re on the roll that Ison is on, it’s going to be hard to knock you off the mountaintop. I don’t think things are finished between him and Edwards, but as long as Ison keeps leaving Nashville with the Bonestorm Championship, he’s going to stay ranked at #1.
