Titans Draft Roundup: Establishing Needs

Welcome to the weekly Tennessee Titans draft roundup for the 2019 NFL Draft. Over the course of the next several weeks, I’ll be releasing this column once a week with my very professional journalism opinions. You’ll find everything from rumors to wild speculation to actual analysis (sometimes). Titan up!

*Okay, so now that the big boon of free agency has come and gone, let’s establish the Titans draft needs. I still think there’s a good chance we see the team sign a veteran wide receiver – the established route runner/contested catch guy that the team is currently lacking (I love Michael Crabtree, @ me cowards). But, they need an injection of speed and electricity at the position, too. That’s where I believe the draft comes into play.

Other than that, I’m looking at both lines. Specifically, getting a starter at RG with the departure of Josh Kline. Whether they end up sliding Jack Conklin in and starting Touchdown Dennis Kelly at RT or not, they need some youth and competition along the interior of the offensive line. On the defensive line, they need some depth – outside of Jurrell Casey, no one stood out in 2018.

But, to me, getting pass rushers is still priority #1. I love Harold Landry. Sharif Finch has shown plenty of potential. The Titans have also shown a propensity to get pressure from other positions – Casey, Jayon Brown, etc.. I love the signing of Cameron Wake, too! But, the Titans still need that bookend to line up opposite of Landry for the next 10 years. You can never have enough pass rushers.

I’d pencil ’em in in this order: EDGE, OG, WR, DT, TE

*Props to the NFL for trying to showcase Nashville as more than just a country music town during the draft.

*Bucky Brooks is on crack, mocking Irv Smith, Jr. to the Titans in the first round. I wouldn’t mind the selection if it was in the second or third round. But, not with a guy like Christian Wilkins on the board. I do think that TE is a position the Titans will bring in some competition at, but not by selecting Smith at #19.

*The Titans are scheduling a meeting with former South Carolina wide receiver Deebo Samuel.

*As it stands, the Titans will have six picks in this year’s draft:

  • 1st round – 19th overall
  • 2nd round – 51st overall
  • 3rd round – 82nd overall
  • 4th round – 121st overall
  • 5th round – 157th overall
  • 6th round – 188th overall
