It doesn’t take much for Dominic Garrini to illicit a reaction. “The Bone Collector” has been tearing shit up all over the place for a while now but this last week has been something else. Dominic, along with tag parter Kevin Ku as the aptly renamed “Violence is Forever,” were a part of some of the most talked about matches from Mania Weekend.
The two teamed with Brett Ison at ‘Family Reunion’ in the fabled SUP 6-Man Tag, then went two on two with Tank and Manny Fernandez at “Adventures in Wrestling.” Add in what basically turned into a death match with Joshua Bishop for AIW along with a scrap with Phil Baroni at Bloodsport and you’ve got a stacked couple of days y’all. I was able to catch up with Dom between all of this and his tag match with Ku against The Aussie Open!
On the SUP Six Man Tag Match:
“Overall I was happy to get to be a part of this match because I’ve been a part of SUP since the very first show. AIW is my home, but in reality SUP is my second home. They’ve taken chances on me and given me huge matches as well as a degree of creative freedom that I don’t get many other places. The crew down there with Ku, Dylan, and Jesse is like family to me, so to be a part of their big moment was something.
I felt as though we had done such a good job of building the match, which was something some of the other promotions that were a part of Family Reunion didn’t do. It made people invest in the match which i think was evident down the stretch.
The match also gave the opportunity for guys like Mr. Brickster, O’Shay Edwards and Cabana Man Dan the chance to wrestle on one of the biggest weekends of the year and get exposure out to the masses and get noticed by a larger crowd, which is part of what SUP is about. SUP tries to expose people to talents that may not have the proper exposure just yet.”
On his match with Joshua Bishop at AIW:
“This is the match that most people are going to be talking about from the weekend. It was just a crazy, all over the place brawl. Josh and I were ready to do whatever it took to not just win, but also to show the world what AIW was about. Eddie Kingston had cut a promo earlier in the week about this being AIW’s coming out party and after seeing that both of us were ready to run through whatever walls we had to to prove ourselves, which I think we did in spades.
I’m sure the big question will be the ear, because I’m sure that’s a spot that everyone will remember. To be honest it was an idea that Ricky Shane Page had given to me about 3 years ago. I had pitched it to BJ Whitmer for the first Submit or Surrender match that I’d done and he didn’t feel comfortable doing it. I as well pitched it to Tom Lawlor for our Dog Collar Match, but he turned it down as well. I knew that Josh would be willing to go with it and believe me it got the reaction I expected it to get. A few days later I still have puncture holes and a lot of bruising on my ear, but it created a moment which is what wrestling is about.”
On the Sadkampf vs. Tank & Manny Fernandez Match:
“This was a match that meant a lot to me, mainly because it was the chance to share a high profile Wrestlemania weekend booking with someone who has legitimately become my best friend over the past year in Kevin Ku. So to get the chance to take on a legend on the Indies like Tank and a legend in the sport like Manny meant a lot.
The match went about as well we could’ve wanted it. Tank and Manny were very old school and didn’t want to call the match so that was fun. I did get busted open again due to some headbutts from Tank. Overall though to get the seal of approval from Tank and Manny as workers and them telling us how much fun they had made it all worth it.”
I’m a huge fan of Dominic Garrini in and out of the ring. He’s a legit badass but maybe more importantly he’s a legit great dude. He also put on one of the more underrated body of works of the weekend. Big time thank you out to Dominic for doing what he does and for the time in what has to be a crazy schedule. Really excited to see who Dom chokes out at SUP: Hold Your Ground on April 21st at The Basement East.
