Movie Review Rewind: Earth (2009)

Earth takes us on a journey to different continents and across the world. It shows animals we could never see up close and the environments they live in. This documentary comes from the people who brought Planet Earth to television. Like that series, Disneynature begins its series by showing the creatures that we share this planet with.

Earth is narrated by James Earl Jones, and follows three different families as they make their way across this world. We follow a family of whales, elephants, and polar bears. We see their struggles and obstacles they come in contact with, but they keep fighting for their family. The main focus is on those three families, but you see more. You see a little bit of everything: Birds, cheetahs, wolves, penguins, foxes, and a great white shark.

This documentary shows how these creatures live and the harshness of nature itself. There are warnings of global warming, but it’s not the focus. The world is changing and that change is altering these creatures’ lives. That cannot be ignored by anyone. It’s happening. But to see these big oceans, sandy deserts, and the highest mountains is amazing. And seeing all of this on the big screen is a must. It will not be the same if you watch on TV. This is for the big screen for sure.

I remember when March of the Penguins was a big hit. I saw that in theatres and I was not that impressed. It was like watching the Discovery Channel. I remember being a little bored at times. It was interesting stuff, but too slow. However, this one is different.

Earth is entertaining and definitely interesting. The images are fantastic and it makes you remember that humans are not the only species that live on this planet. We all share it and sometimes we forget that. If you see this on the big screen, you won’t be disappointed. And if you have seen this already, then you have seen their preview for next year’s Disneynature film, Oceans. Judging by this, Oceans should be a must-see on next year’s Earth Day.

Disneynature Bonus:

MONKEY KINGDOM (2015)

4 out of 5 stars

Disneynature never fails to fascinate and this one is no exception. Narrated by Tina Fey, this nature doc about a monkey mother struggling to raise her baby is deeply effective by getting closer than humanly possible to its subjects. The filmmakers do a fantastic job finding the drama and laughs within the jungle. Our eyes will stay fascinated as we divulge and learn from a troupe of monkeys whom resemble us more than we may ever admit. It engages, educates and entertains.
