The Losers is one of those movies where I had no idea what to expect. The previews looked entertaining, but as we all know, previews can be very deceiving. So my expectations were not real high to begin with. I found myself hoping that this movie would at least be half-way decent. The movie surpassed my expectations and then some. It is an exciting movie with great action and more than a few comedic parts.
The Losers consist of Roque (Idris Elba), Jensen (Chris Evans), Pooch (Columbus Short), Cougar (Oscar Jaenada), and their leader, Clay (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). They are a group of CIA black-ops who are framed for a terrible murder in Bolivia. It was a mission that was set-up to get the team out there so they could be betrayed and killed. The Losers want revenge, but want their lives back even more.
A woman with a secret named Aisha (Zoe Saldana) finds them and offers them that opportunity–well sort of. They can return to the U.S. and get their revenge on a mystery man named Max (Jason Patric). However, it is a suicide mission. They can get their vengeance but they will die for it. But there is nothing in Bolivia for them and what do they really have to lose, besides their lives I guess.
The Losers is based on a Vertigo/DC comic and director Sylvain White adds that comic book touch to the movie, specifically at the beginning. And it is cool. It is not out-of-place. Not in a movie like this. It is a fun movie that delivers on entertaining the audience and keeping the pace crazy and quick.
One thing that impressed about this movie is its characters. They all have a past and a couple have a family. They are not just these CIA badasses – they have a life back home and people they love. So this suicide mission is not an easy decision. But they are running out of choices. But the two most interesting characters are Max and Jensen and it is mainly for their wit.
Evans is a good actor that has not been able to show his comedic side that often. But he really steals every scene he is in. He is a guy that you cannot dislike no matter what. Jensen is a computer genius but he is over-the-top at times with his t-shirts, comments, and his singing. There is a scene that features a Journey song and it is funny. Maybe the best scene in the entire movie. You will understand what I’m talking about once you see it.
Then there is the man who set the guys up and wanted them dead. Patric plays Max with cleverness, violence, and humor. Humor is the best part of the character. He is not just one-dimensional. He has a personality (as do all of the main characters) and every time he is in a scene, he never disappoints. Patric has some of the best lines in the movie. His only competition is Jensen. This may sound weird, but Jensen and Max could make a great comedy team.
The Losers is an action movie that was made to entertain. There are some cheesy parts but just a few and that is not bad. There is no complex story here. It does not require you to think, and some times that is not a bad thing either. Kind of relaxing really. A movie like this just asks the audience to sit back and enjoy the ride. So if you enjoy laughing, things blowing up, fighting, and a little romance then you will have a blast with The Losers.
