I’m never going to top this intro from last year, so I’m just going to paste it in here:
Two years ago, I wrote this piece about shocking picks in the NFL Draft, and it became one of our most-read pieces in site history. To this day, it remains just inside our top 10, and I absolutely hate that fact. Why? I just hate the headline – it seems so clickbaity. And, it looks like most of our hits on that piece were from junk bots on StumbleUpon, which no real humans use any more. I looked at the analytics, and saw that people were spending an average of two seconds on the article. So, it had all these inflated stats, and that’s not who we are, folks. We want real quality – not to entertain robots.
But, on a more basic level, it’s just not fun like our “most Southern names in the NFL Draft” feature. And, it worked in 2016 because there were several actual shocking picks in that draft. That’s not going to be the case every single year. But, fuck it – for some reason, I put it on my content plan for this year, so I have to do it or else said plan won’t be complete.
Seriously – why did I add this again this year?
THE 10 MOST SHOCKING PICKS FROM THE 2019 NFL DRAFT
10. Bryce Love – Surprised to see Washington invest a draft pick in the running back position. Now, I know Adrian Peterson isn’t going to play forever, but they still have a solid corps behind him in Chris Thompson and Samaje Perine. Not to mention Derrius Guice who was poised to be the workhorse before an injury sidelined his rookie season.
9. Trace McSorley – Look, it’s a sixth round quarterback pick. I get it. It doesn’t really mean all that much. But, the fact they were willing to do it just a year after drafting Lamar Jackson? I don’t know, y’all. Caught me off guard.
8. Jawaan Taylor – Some folks had him going as high as #7 overall. The Jags got him, but in the second round. Pretty surprising for a guy who was widely considered the top tackle prospect in this draft.
7. Jalen Hurd – Well, well, well – for all the shit talk that Hurd heard out of the state of Tennessee, he ended up proving everyone wrong. Some thought he might not be drafted at all. Then, he ends up being a 3rd round pick for the San Francisco 49ers, where he’ll get the chance to become an offensive weapon. Wild.
6. Greedy Williams – Absolutely stunned by how far Williams slid and how many defensive backs were taken before him. The Cleveland Browns got a guy at #46 that some people had going at #5 overall.
5. Will Grier – Is it actually time to start thinking about moving on from Cam Newton? I mean, this one raised some eyebrows. There’s an awful lot of peopler who think Grier could develop into a nice starting quarterback in the NFL. Some even thought he’d go in the first round. To take him in the 3rd round, though….like I said, that’s gonna raise some eyebrows.
4. Kaleb McGary – McGary could be the best offensive lineman to ever play the game. It’s not about that. I just don’t understand the philosophy of the Atlanta Falcons in the first round. They beef up their offensive line in free agency, I’m thinkin’ that means they’re going defense in the first round. Instead, they draft Chris Lindstrom and then TRADE UP back into the first round to grab McGary. Did not see that one coming.
3. D.K. Metcalf – Yeah, top 10 pick, huh? Best receiver in the draft, huh? I can’t help but wonder just why in the fuck Metcalf slid all the way to the Seattle Seahawks at #64. Maybe someone will write a book about it one day that I won’t read, but will check out the highlights so I can hear what happened here.
2. Clelin Ferrell – This is a guy some people had going at the end of the first round! With Josh Allen and Ed Oliver on the board, the Oakland Raiders go Ferrell, who was super productive, but man – seems like a reach to me. Regardless of what I think, this one was still surprising.
1.Daniel Jones – I don’t really need to go into this one, do I? Again….Allen and Oliver were on the board. You could’ve drafted any cornerback you wanted. And, you decide to go quarterback. Okay, well – that’s fine. But, the quarterback you get is the 59th rated player in the draft (according to Todd McShay)??? At #6 overall??? Yikes. this one doesn’t look pretty.
