In The Intruder, a young married couple bail on the big city to live in their dream home out in the country in Napa Valley. But they don’t have a clue what comes with it. Or shall I say who comes with it.
Scott (Michael Ealy) is a successful ad exec. His wife Annie (Meagan Good) is a writer for women’s magazines (which we never see her actually write anything for) and both are ready for a fresh start. There’s been cheating in the past, but he calls instead of texts now, and they’re ready for a family. I can’t think of a better place to do that than at their newly-purchased $3.3 million country estate.
Charlie Peck (Dennis Quaid) is the reluctant seller whose memories within his family’s home walls are priceless. Yet, he makes a quick sale as he’s moving down to Florida to live with his daughter. Yeah right. He loves that house too much to leave it behind. As Charlie’s departure date keeps getting pushed back, he shows up more and more unexpectedly – making things more and more uncomfortable as his home obsession turns its sights to Annie.
Let’s cut to the chase: You know what you’re going to get with this daffy domestic thriller. Characters don’t answer their phones when they should, they open the door instead of locking it, and they causally walk past a strange stalker in their kitchen when he’s standing right in front of them! Director Deon Taylor makes everything too obvious for there to be any suspense or surprises for the audience. Charlie’s dark secrets are easily guessable with every action being totally predictable.
You’ve seen it all before with The Intruder, but you’ve never seen Quaid like this. With his devilish smile, he vitalizes each scene by going full-on creepy in an unhinged performance the movie can hardly handle. He’s the most fun to watch as absurdity goes through the roof.
