My heart was broken earlier this year when I learned that Edgefield Sports Bar & Grill would be closing their doors. I may have even shed a single tear upon hearing the news.
It was a staple of the East Nashville lifestyle, and my God, they had the best damned patty melt in Nashville, maybe even the entire universe and potentially multiverse if it’s real. There was no better way to kill some time (and beers) before a Southern Underground Pro show on a Sunday at The Basement East. There was no better place to hide out from all the hustle and bustle downtown. I don’t mean to hype it up too much, but it was the perfect spot.
Well, friends – I’m here to report that maybe…just maybe…there’s reason for hope that some semblance of the Edgefield we all knew and loved could be coming back this fall.
McIlroy, along with Sam Ross and Brandon Bramhall, plan to open the dive bar in early fall with a new name and minor updates to the space. The no-frills venue will serve cold beer and food seven days a week from lunch until very late, according to a media release. It will have music, sports, pool tables and games.
So, a little different, but the same sort of spirit.
I think it’s fair to question just how authentic the owners of one of the world’s highest rated cocktail bars can keep it, but at least they seem to understand what made Edgefield so charming to begin with from reading The Tennessean’s article.
I mean, at the very least, it’s better than having no Edgefield at all. Perhaps it could even be better? That’s the optimistic outlook. Or, it could end up being some shell of its former self. That’s the pessimistic outlook. I don’t know what to expect. I don’t know what to feel right now. I’m flooded with emotions and nostalgia. It feels like Edgefield has been closed for eight years. It’s like getting back with an ex – you just don’t know what’s changed in that time you were both absent from each other.
Will they still recognize me? Did they ever actually recognize me? Is that why things soured?
This is getting weird.
We’ll just have to wait and see – but if you’ve spent countless hours in bed staring at the ceiling because you can’t sleep, thinking about how much you miss those fuckin’ patty melts, this at least has to ease that anxiety a little bit.
I, for one, am ecstatic that I’ll be able to sleep now.
