We’re about halfway through the year and with no SUP shows until August, we might as well shout out a few of the best matches of the year to date. When I planned to do this, it sounded like a fun, easy write-up, when in actuality, I’ve stressed on this list sooooo much. I mean, it’s been a hell of a year so far for Southern Underground Pro. So much so that I could probably have done a Top 15 or 20 but that may have just led to me ranking every match they’ve had in 2019…I would have legit lost sleep. So, without further ado let’s dive into the Top SUP matches of 2019 (so far):
10. Sadkampf vs. The Jollyville Fuck-Its (I AM KING): Two of my favorite teams on the scene trying to kill each other…why? because fuck it, that’s why! This match has to contend with being on the card along side Brett Ison/Nick Gage, which is such a shadow but as expected, this match was all kinds of violent fun. Would love to see the Fuck Its make the trip down and get a rematch with the re-named Violence is Forever for the brand, spanking new SUP Tag Team Titles.
9. Scramble Match (What Could Possibly Go Right?): We couldn’t have a SUP list without a scramble and this may be my favorite of all the SUP scrambles. With a group like Cole Radrick, Bradley Prescott IV, Wayne Moxxi, Logan Stunt, Zach Cooper, Duke Cornell, Peyton Polson, and Adam Slade, we were destined for some good old, fashioned fuckery. Every one of these competitors did something to stand out while still putting together a fun match which can be tricky with this many opponents. Highly recommend.
8. Jaden Newman vs. Craig Mitchell (Hold Your Ground): One of my favorite moments of the year happened here with Jaden throwing up the #1 to combat Craig’s middle finger. I still remember the energy in The Basement East as these two got going. Super intense with back and forth action from both men. Craig is having a killer year but we’re gonna look back at this match up as a real turning point in the story of Numero Uno.
7. Kerry Awful vs. Manders (What Could Possibly Go Right?): Full transparency: I was over at the bar for a good chunk of this match right beside George Kittle who was in town to see his boy Manders lay the lumber. I gotta say it was pretty cool seeing him go bonkers for the Manders dive that nearly took out 1/3rd of the damn audience. Crazy, awesome slugfest between two crazy, awesome badasses.
6. Allie Kat vs. Kevin Ku (What Could Possibly Go Right?): Y’all remember when Allie tried to senton Ku straight to hell? Because I sure as shit do. This entire show could be labeled as ‘brutal’ and I still find myself thinking about this specific match-up. The match itself was insane in the membrane but the overall energy in the venue for Allie really took this up another level or two.
5. Brett Ison vs. Nick Gage (I AM KING): The image of Brett standing in the ring waiting for Gage while fucking Metallica plays will be something I reminisce on the rest of my life. In a world where no one wants a piece of Nick Gage, we have a guy in Brett that wanted the whole fucking thing. This was not for the faint of heart nor did we expect it to be. A real highlight here as Brett hits a choke breaker on the fucking King.
4. Violence is Forever vs. They Might Be Giants (Those Who Fear Tomorrow): THERE WAS SO MUCH BLOOD. Ok, now that I’ve got that out of the way. This match nearly tore the building apart. Right away, we had chairs flying which led to skewers which led to damn tack flip flops. Head to IWTV right now to see this insanity.
3. Joshua Bishop vs. Manders (Hold Your Ground): I think I said it in my recap, but man these two had a blast just beating the absolute hell out of each other. I swore there was gonna be a dent in the concrete floor from Manders being legit body slammed, but there wasn’t. I could watch these two fight (or tag team as Team Old Town Road) every day of the week if time and the human body permitted.
2. Dominic Garrini/Kevin Ku/Brett Ison vs. O’Shay Edwards/Cabana Man Dan/Mr. Brickster (Family Reunion): THE match from Mania Weekend, imo. Yes, I’m biased but we got a hell of a story coming in and a fun, kickass payoff. All six men brought the energy along with their A+++ game leading to a killer finale.
1. Brett Ison vs. Allie Kat (Those Who Fear Tomorrow): This was hailed as “the biggest homegrown match in SUP history” and there’s no denying it delivered big time. We got everything we love about Southern Underground Pro with a little comedy, a lot of kick assery, and a damn fine story.
This was a different kind of challenge for Brett especially coming off his match with JD Drake at the SUP show before this. There is a different kind of respect between he and Allie which had The Pitbull a little out of sorts. Add in a top notch performance from Allie and the Bonestorm champ had his hands full. I could go on and on about what these two gave us. Whether you’ve seen it or not go watch this ASAP over on IWTV.
