GCW finally made their debut in Nashville and hot damn did it not disappoint. I could write about what this means to our city, but y’all already know. SUP has been fucking shit up, carrying the city on it’s back, and for the hottest indie to come spend a weekend down here in the building SUP uses…that’s just fucking cool. It was an emotional day for many reasons, but enough of this – let’s pop this shit off! Here’s my GCW Lights Out recap.
KTB vs. Blake Christian: Blake is a local cat that we caught just a few weeks ago out in Gladeville. The young man fucking goes and putting him with a guy like KTB just secured that he would look like a complete stud. This was a perfect opener to get the crowd hot, especially after Blake got tossed into the damn rafters. Back and forth we went before Blake made a final push and got the HUGE win in his GCW debut. Be on the lookout for BC moving forward, y’all.
Three Way Dance Tag Team Fuckery- Violence is Forever (Kevin Ku and Dominic Garrini) vs. The Carnies (Nick Iggy and Kerry Awful) vs. The Rejects (John Wayne Murdoch and Reed Bentley): Like so much of this show, I really can’t put this match into words. I mean it started with an absolute brawl kicked off with VIF and The Carnies really wanting at one another. From there, we had a screwdriver (the tool, not the drink), a staple gun, broken chairs, and doors that were used expertly by these mad men.
At one point, Kerry and Dom had a standoff with each holding the other’s partner at ransom! Kerry had a piece of a broken board ready to stab Ku in the head while Dom went super old school and was just gonna rip Iggy’s famous smile right off his face. Of course, this was after Reed had STAPLED Kerry’s mask to his face. Fucking madness. The Rejects get the win after John Wayne Murdoch gave Dom a destroyer from the top rope through a door. Read that last sentence again then go watch this insanity.
Effy vs. Orange Cassidy: This was pure sex. We got the best of both men with a real highlight being Effy putting his hands in Cassidy’s pockets. There was so much “Daddy” and “Freshly Squeezed” going through the building that I legit thought we were gonna start seeing heads explode. Effy gets the win and may have inched closer to a shot at the IWTV Championship. Watch out for this one when MOTY contenders are announced.
Tony Deppen vs. Rich Swann: Swann nearly did the impossible, y’all. For a split second, I thought Tony was gonna kick back, dance a little, and not be a total piece of shit. I was wrong. We were all wrong. Deppen was faking and used the opportunity to put Swann in a headlock. Things would only get worse from there, as Tony brought in one of those evil scooters we see littered all over town. A scooter in The Basement East. Total bullshit. Deppen took a lap, then used the scooter momentum to punch Rich sending him crumbling to the ground. Thankfully, Rich recovered and overtook the scooter.
The two eventually made their way back inside the ring but not before Rich hit Tony with a scooter kick. Once the two got back in the ring, things didn’t slow down as both were flying around like the aces they are. Seriously, these two are both soooooooo good. Tony picks up the win but we were all winners here.
Three Way Dance- Mance Warner vs. Matthew Justice vs. Brett Ison: Mance and Justice were out first which had the venue nearly in silence because of the possibilities of violence. Then, out of nowhere comes The Pitbull’s music leading us to go absolutely fucking crazy goddamn bonkers. I’ve never been a part of something like that. There were people screaming and crying all at once. Legit getting goosebumps writing this.
Once Brett was inside the ring, shit popped real quick. There were doors, chairs and eye pokes all around. I thought the roof was gonna come off when Brett tripped both of his opponents in two separate corners then brought those big boy knees right round. He wasn’t through, people.
While Mance and Justice battled for position on the turnbuckle, Brett decided to sling both of them psychos through a couple of stacked up doors. Again, the place went fucking LOCO. Out of nowhere comes a “Street Justice” chant. Brett looked like he was legit gonna kill a mother fucker. Justice eats Street Justice, but before Brett can make the cover, Mance comes flying in with a huge knee to The Pitbull. Ol Mancer returns to The Basement East and leaves with a win.
All these guys tore it up. Go watch this ASAP and soak the violence in. If Brett Ison isn’t on more GCW shows before the year is out, I will be shocked.
Scramble Match- Alex Zayne vs. Shane Mercer vs. Allie Kat vs. Manders vs. Logan Stunt vs. AJ Gray vs. JJ Garrett: My boy AZ made his Basement East debut and boy was I fired up! My man can legit fly which he showed by leaping over the corner post to the outside with ease.
Everyone involved had their moments with some highlights being Logan curb stomping Zayne onto a chair from the top rope, Shane tossing Logan nearly to the bar and Manders being the hoss that he is. Allie Kat has been on one lately which showed with her brand of meow violence in full effect. It was also AJ’s return to The Basement East, which was pretty cool. How about JJ Garrett showing up and showing the fuck out in the midst of all this talent? Big weekend for him.
It looked like Zayne was gonna pick up the win after he hit his patented Taco Driver on Allie, but it wasn’t meant to be. The Iron Demon Shane Mercer gets the dub in an absolute fuck fest.
Jimmy Lloyd vs. Markus Crane: This may have been tamer than people expected, but goddamn pal – we still got to see Jimmy go through a board with cut aluminum cans! There was plunder and the two smacked each other around before Jimmy picks up another win on his impressive weekend.
Nate Webb vs. Tracy Smothers: If the entire weekend was a fever dream, then this was the inception part of the dream. Like a fever dream inside of a fever dream kind of shit. After saying some bullshit about the Titans and the Preds, I was ready to go after Smothers. Thankfully, ring announcer Righteous Jesse was there to hold me back. When shit was getting super hot, Nate swung in like a hero to defend our honor.
Even with Tracy’s shenanigans with his big stick (not a dick reference), Nate Webb put him down and got the win. That was for the city, Tracy, you fuck! I have to admit it’s all kinds of crazy to say I saw Bill Dundee and Tracy Smothers on the same weekend in 2019 (Editor’s note: On GCW shows no less, Mose!).
GCW Heavyweight Title- Nick Gage (c) vs. Marko Stunt: People were nervous for Marko, and rightfully so. Gage is Gage, but Marko isn’t one to back down. Mr. Fun Size fired away with all he had on The King! In the midst of all this, Marko obtained the first black eye of his entire life. From Nick Gage. Tell me a better ‘first black eye’ story – I’ll wait. Marko cleared out the tank and threw everything at Gage, but it just wasn’t enough. Nick Fucking Gage retains, but gave Marko some love post-match, which had to be a boost for the older Stunt brother.
Thank you Brett Lauderdale. Thank you GCW. This was one of the best wrestling weekends of my life. Seeing my friends in a GCW ring was something I really can’t put into words. All I’ve got left is a “Please Come Back” chant though all signs point to another GCW-Nashville invasion in the not too distant future.
