B-Boy Is My 2019 SCI Weekend MVP

Independent wrestling legend B-Boy came to Tennessee for the first time back in November of 2018, when he wrestled SUP’s Bonestorm Champion, Brett Ison. It was a match I personally named Tennessee’s ‘Match of the Year,’ whatever that’s worth. But, we all came away from it saying, “yo….B-Boy in Tennessee works.”

So, to say I was elated when I initially saw the announcement that he was competing in the 2019 Scenic City Invitational would be an understatement. When I saw that he was wrestling at Crux Wrestling’s Hey Jealousy -AND- SUP’s All Hell Breaks Loose, I was downright jacked. But, even with a pre-existing sense of appreciation for the man’s work, it was impossible for me to grasp just how great he really is until I saw him live.

Several people saw B-Boy for the first time this week. He wasn’t fighting in main events for championships. Hell, he was bounced from the first round of the Scenic City Invitational by Slim J. But, it was the quality of his showings that has me labeling him as the weekend’s MVP. I haven’t gotten around to listing my top 10 matches of the weekend yet, but there’s a good chance that three of B-Boy’s four matches end up on it. I don’t know that anyone else in Chattanooga or Nashville last weekend was as consistently great as he was.

B-Boy’s SCI Weekend

Night One – At Crux Wrestling’s Hey Jealousy, B-Boy took on Chip Day in what was an absolute war of attrition. I would consider that match the best match of the night, and there are many others who would agree with me. It was grueling, and I’m honestly tired just thinking about it.

Night Two – B-Boy and Slim J kicked off the whole damn Scenic City Invitational, trotting out first on “opening night” of the tournament. The match was fun, back-and-forth, and it honestly yielded one of the biggest shocks of the tournament when Slim J got the win. I was on Checks and Championships a few weeks ago citing B-Boy as one of my favorites to win the whole tournament.

Night Three – I’m still hearing the echoes of the dueling ‘B-Boy’ and ‘Pitbull’ chants. Something about these two warriors just clicks when they step into the ring together. It’s a chemistry that few opponents have. Much like their showdown in 2018, this one was an instant classic.

Night Four – By the time SUP Sunday rolls around on SCI weekend, we’re all already drained and feeling a little overwhelmed with emotion. Hearing the reaction B-Boy got when he walked out in The Basement East didn’t exactly quell that emotion. Then, when the bell rang, he and Kevin Ku put on one of the best matches of the weekend. He told us he didn’t know about this 4-day loop thing at his age, but I’ll tell you what – you never would’ve seen it the way he wrestled all four days last weekend.

The bottom line is that B-Boy came all the way across the country to wrestle four of the south’s finest wrestlers and absolutely delivered in every way possible.
