Hey guys! We have finally made it into the home stretch! That’s right; we’re only a little over two weeks until the return of college football. Since this is my favorite time of year, I’ll be dropping some random CFB articles for all of you that are as excited as I am. Today, we’re going to look at my Preseason College Football Top 25. Let’s dive in and then discuss it a bit, shall we?
Preseason College Football Top 25
1. Clemson
2. Alabama
3. Georgia
4. Oklahoma
5. Ohio State
6. LSU
7. Texas
8. Florida
9. Michigan
10. Texas A&M
11. Notre Dame
12. Oregon
13. Washington
14. Penn State
15. Wisconsin
16. Utah
17. Michigan State
18. Auburn
19. Iowa State
20. Army
21. Syracuse
22. Missouri
23. Iowa
24. Mississippi State
25. Nebraska
The top six are relatively easy. Clemson is the reigning king and deserves the top spot. Alabama, Georgia, and Oklahoma are in the same ballpark, and could easily be our four playoff teams. The rest of our top 10 are within striking distance of the playoff.
The SEC holds down the list with eight teams. Am I an SEC homer? Sure. But it’s hard to keep a lot of these teams out. Alabama is a no-brainer, with an offense that will be better than last season. LSU has a TON of hype coming into this season and they have probably the best safety in college football with Grant Delpit. I’m also buying into Texas A&M, and they’ll shoot up the boards if they pull the Clemson upset. Stoney has Florida as a playoff dark horse contender, and he’s right.
It’s super predictable and boring to say that the Big 10 is between Michigan and Ohio State. You don’t even have to watch football to know that. Don’t count out Michigan State though. The Spartans return eight members of a defense that absolutely smothered teams last season. If they get a healthy QB, they could make some noise.
I know Texas seems high at #7, but winning the Big 12 seems really attainable for them. Oklahoma and a sneaky good Iowa State are really the only major hurdles for the Longhorns. Sam Ehlinger will probably be even better this year, which is really saying something. And speaking of Iowa State, QB Brock Purdy is damn good and has a kick ass name. That counts for something.
The Pac-12 looks like a race between Oregon, Utah, and Washington (I can’t be the only one ready for some #Pac12AfterDark, right?) Oregon gets the edge here because of Justin Herbert and probably the best OL in the conference. Washington only returns TWO starters on defense, but has Jacob Eason starting at QB. You guys remember him, right?
Army also earned a Top 20 ranking! Before you say anything, try to remember that they took Oklahoma to OT and are 21-5 in the last two seasons. Nebraska winds up on our list with the return of QB Adrian Martinez, who averaged almost 300 YPG as a freshman!
If your team isn’t ranked as high as you’d like, it’s only because I hate you and your team. Feel free to drop me a line on the twitters to tell me how stupid I am, or about how much you love this list. I’m good with either.
