After living the SCI life for a few days, it was finally time to head back to the 6-1-5 for some sweet SUP action. Haley and I made a quick stop off at The Crying Wolf (once they remembered to unlock the front door), then we were off to lose what was left of our voices.
Zachary Cooper vs. Dominic Garrini- This was gonna be an all out war until some freak accident shit happened. Cooper banged up his shoulder something awful and had to call it a day early. He’s a super tough kid that would have finished the match with one arm if they would have allowed it. All the best to Cooper, who has plenty of big time matches ahead of him once he’s 100%.
Jaden Newman vs. Manders- This one has been building and building and building, so once both men finally got across from each other, it took exactly no time for this to get ugly. Manders told us going in that he was gonna give Jaden the ass whooping his mama never gave him. Well, Jaden must have caught wind of that, because once he had the opportunity, he blasted The Cornbelt Cowboy with an elbow straight from revelations, then covered for the victory. There was genuine shock in The Basement East with a ton of boos coming down on top of Jaden. It really is a testament to the weekend Manders had that the crowd reacted the way it did. What a win for Jaden tho. He started the weekend by winning the Crux Tri-States title then ends it by beating Manders! All hail.
Alan Angels vs. “The Natty Fucking Daddy” BP4- OH HELL YEAH IT’S BP4!!!! The guy has so many booking/ideas in general that I wish I could get into with y’all. We’ve got a show with him coming down the pipe in a few weeks so I’ll leave it for that. Any who, take Bradley, then add in a guy like Alan Angels and you’re gonna have a lot of fun. It really feels like both of these dudes could have huge years in 2020. The finish comes when Alan Angels catches BP4 in the Wing Snapper, while Bradley was spitting up Angry Orchard I believe. Big win for Angels, but be on the lookout for both these cats.
Cabana Man Dan vs. Marko Stunt: This was a main event match that we were blessed with early in the day. There is so much history between these two that the friendly rivalry felt soooooooo special. One of my favorite moments of the weekend was Dan laying his newly won New South title on top of Marko to hold him down. The entire room exploded with laughter and cheers, which is a pretty great way to sum up this match. You’re really gonna have to see this one in motion to appreciate what these guys brought. Dan gets the win. Marko says his Basement East farewell (for now) and there isn’t a dry eye in the house. Love you two!
Manders vs. Dominic Garrini- The Cornbelt Cowboy hits the ring demanding another match. Pretty sure he called the Jaden loss a “goddamn fluke” along the way. Just as everyone is getting riled up for more Manders, ‘Zombie’ starts playing and we realize we are about to be blessed with Dom/Manders. From here, the venue is on def con 5 levels of riled up. Garrini started grappling right away which I’m totally here for. This was a constant battle of “huge offense, crazy reversal, more huge offense.” I thought Dom had it when he used one of those crazy reversals to lock in a triangle choke. The bad news is that Manders, to quote Cline, is a big cornfed boy who just picked up and dropped Dom leading to very near fall. Manders looked to put Garrini away before being caught with a knee then a sick, nasty piledriver for the 1-2-3. On a weekend with a laundry list of underrated matches, add this one to the bunch. Manders made his way to the back with cheers of “One More Match” and “Manders” throughout the building. Not sure anyone’s stock rose like Manders’ did over the weekend.
B-Boy vs. Kevin Ku- If the day/weekend wasn’t already awesome enough we got B-Boy hitting the ring with ‘Real Muthaphuckkin G’s’ in the air. Still on a high from that, no lie. Now this isn’t a surprise knowing these dudes but this was a HoF level strike fest. Seeing these two go back and forth was a real scene, especially when B-Boy got his combination game going. I think that was the real story by the end of this one. Ku is a legit sum bitch with his strikes buuuuut he just couldn’t hang with the OG aka New Age Punisher aka B-Boooooy. Hell of a finishing combo with a thud of a brain buster locking up the dub for B-Boy. With a win like this in his SUP debut, there’s no doubt B-Boy will be back in Nashville, right?
AC Mack vs. Logan Stunt- After nearly bullshitting his way to an SCI crown, AC Mack was in a mood when he made his way into the ring. After talking some boo shit, Logan Stunt did us all a favor and hit the curtain with that Twisted Sister just blaring. After getting in Mack’s face and having to be held back by Doug, the place was going loco for the younger Stunt brother. Just as the fever was hitting a pitch, AC cracked Logan in the head with a chair that he had been sitting in. There was a collective groan in the venue that had AC all pumped up. After more shit talking, Logan was able to pull himself together with the sole mission of getting after ole AC. Even with that skull crushing head shot, Logan brought the fight until he got kicked in his dick. Another Mack win that’s cheaper than a Speedway burrito.
Craig Mitchell vs. Alex Zayne- If you liked that gross chair shot that AC gave Logan, boy does this match have something for you. How about Zayne diving to the outside only to have Craig hit him with a trash can causing The Sauce to plummet to the floor? It was so gross and continues to be gross with every re-watch. Thankfully for us and Taco Bell stock, Zayne was up and ready to do some more wild shit right away. This was almost a best of backyard in a ring and my god was I here for it. After so much crazy cockamamie bullshit, Craig picks up the win with the craziest of the cockamamie bullshit- a package piledriver from the second rope. Another one I highly recommend y’all watch again and again.
Bonestorm Championship: Brett Ison (c) vs. O’Shay Edwards vs. Anthony Henry vs. JD Drake- Got damn what a way to end the weekend.
All of these guys were busy fucking bees over the course of those four days so to see them bring it like they did is a testament to their badassery. Cause they brought it, it’s friends and it’s friends’ friends with the amount of violence they fit in this one.
We’ve talked about Brett Ison looking like a different man since his match with Drake earlier in the year. Well I can confirm that mo fucking killer was back and ready to put both of the WorkHorsemen in the grave. Drake/Henry really dominated much of the match with their elite tag team skills shining through. Brett took a shit ton of damage, but he’s the fucking Pitbull!!! Kill or be killed is more than a cool saying – it’s how the man lives.
A legit highlight was Brett and O’Shay working together with Drake catching that smoke back to back at the hands of those Ronin. Another being Shay tossing Anthony Henry into the fabled Basement East beam. Late in the match, Drake looks to smash Brett with a steel chair only to eat a rolling iron elbow through said chair.
I love Brett for many reasons…one of them being after a war like that, you could hear him politely say “give me my goddamn belt.” I don’t know why that just tickled me.
Oh we aren’t done though, as AC Mack attacked Brett Ison post match. Yes, you read that right. AC is completely ready to die as only a man that sneaks up on Ison can be. After some of the locker room cleared with what we’ll call “The Foundation of Southern Underground Pro,” things got calmed down and the weekend was officially over.
What we kept calling “Southern Wrestlemania” weekend really hit home with this show. It felt almost like a resetting of the table. Manders is now chasing Jaden, Farewell (for now) Marko, Dan is the man (he has been), AC Mack took a shot at the king and missed. The two things that didn’t change? Craig Mitchell stayed winning and Brett Ison is STILL the Bonestorm Champion. Hmmmmm.
