Week 1 of the college football season is in the books with more than a few doozies to discuss. Yeah the top four (Clemson, Bama, UGA and Oklahoma) all did what they were supposed to as did #5 Ohio St and #6 LSU, but there were some real question marks from there on. Let’s do this – it’s my CFB Week 1 recap.
CFB Week 1 Recap
#8 Florida struggles: I’m not one to put a ton of weight into week 1, but Feleipe Franks looked to be the Franks of “The Time Before Mullen.” Big things were expected out of him this year with some dark horse playoff buzz around the Gators. Franks will be the key to that coming to fruition or falling by the wayside.
#9 Notre Dame does Notre Dame things: It wasn’t pretty but the Irish are sitting at 1-0 after facing a much tougher test from Louisville than anyone expected. The new head man for the Cardinals, Scott Satterfield, brought that speed offense over from Appalachian St and boy did it look good sporadically against the Irish defense. Ian Book just didn’t look collected through the majority of the game which will need to be looked at before the Irish head to Athens in a couple of weeks.
#16 Auburn beats #11 Oregon: In an instant classic, Bo Nix kicks his career off as Auburn quarterback with a huge feather in the cap. I’m still not 100% sold on the Auburn o-line, but if they can protect Nix, this team may just turn some heads.
Shaky looking #21 Iowa St and #24 Nebraska: The Cyclones very nearly lost to Northern Iowa, but thanks to an offensive fumble recovery in triple OT followed by a short touchdown run, they got the win. Matt Campbell is really gonna have to Matt Campbell if this crew is gonna get to 8+ wins, which is a goal.
Nebraska turned it on in the second half, but things were looking less than optimal at half time. Much like a couple of other teams we’ve talked about, the quarterback position is gonna have to take big strides this year for Nebraska to feel like they’ve earned the ranking.
UT loses to Georgia St: Is this a ghastly loss? Absolutely, but Vol fans need to chill out. This was Jeremy Pruitt’s thirteenth game as Vol head coach and he’s trying to make up for 13+ years of bad management at the university. I know everyone loves Fulmer again, but when he was HC, he lost to Wyoming at Homecoming! In his first year at Alabama, Nick Saban lost to UL-Monroe, who was coming off a four-win season, down in Tuscaloosa. Now am I sayin’ Pruitt is Saban? I don’t know. What I am saying is no one will know if he’s not given the chance to build. Honestly, I feel for the guy that has to be the face of that program with the down right insufferable Vol fan base. The same fan base that says things like “this was a punch in our face as fans.” How lame is that? This is the same fan base that quit on the team before the game was settled and ducked out of Neyland Stadium. Tighten up Vol fans or pick a new team to half root for like you do now.
Wyoming beats Missouri: Another surprising loss for an SEC team that had a little buzz around it. One minute Mizzou is up 14-0, then they give up 27 points in the second quarter! Wyoming ran all over the place with two backs going over the century mark. If the defense doesn’t figure some things out, this may be a looooong season for the Tigers.
If Week 1 was any indication of what we should expect in 2019 than we’re in for a whale of a year.
