Nashville Reviews: Nadeen’s Hermitage Haven

I’m sure the fact that Nadeen’s Hermitage Haven was voted as the recipient of our Nashville Hot Chicken Award in 2018 raised a few eyebrows. But, their Nashville hot chicken and waffles are the stuff of legend. Clearly, the SoBros Network readership thought so, too.

A year later, and they’re still doing things right out at Nadeen’s in Hermitage. My girlfriend, my good friend RHog, and I decided we’d venture out to a nice brunch on Saturday morning. Me being the content-minded individual I am, I saw the perfect opportunity to type up the 21st review in our “Nashville Reviews” series. LFG.

RHog and I got “the Trash Hash” – a bed of hash browns topped with cheese whiz (the type you get on a Philly cheese steak, not the type that comes out of a can), diced tomatoes, jalapenos, and two eggs. My girlfriend got the chicken & waffles. That Trash Hash is the perfect “hungover food.” I’ve had it twice now and both times, it’s been fantastic. I prefer the Nashville hot chicken & waffles, but the girlfriend isn’t a fan of the heat, so standard issue chicken it was. I’ve also had the Farmer’s Skillet a couple of times, too – you’ll need to loosen your belt after that one. I’ve eaten breakfast only so far in my handful of trips to Nadeen’s, but that damn hot chicken sandwich is calling my name.

It’s definitely one of the best brunch spots in the Hermitage area. For more on Nadeen’s Hermitage Haven, check ’em out here.

Food: 7.2/10 – the Trash Hash should absolutely become a staple of your weekend brunch rotation if you’re out in the Hermitage area. The hash browns were crispy and golden brown, softened by cheese, the juice from the tomatoes, and the eggs. It all melded together into greasy, cheesy bliss. I love the crisp of a fresh jalapeno, and it provided just enough heat to give it a real kick, too. How could no one think of something so simple before? This is a masterpiece. The chicken and waffles were A+, too – a nice thick, hearty, and juicy cut of chicken with the perfect amount of syrup to provide some sweetness without becoming a soupy mess. Well done, Nadeen.

Booze: 6.4/10 – I wasn’t tossin’ ’em back on Saturday morning, but I’ve tossed a couple back at Nadeen’s before. Solid beer list with fair prices. Can’t complain about that.

Value: 7/10 – Picking up a tab at Nadeen’s will have you doing cartwheels compared to the tabs you’ll pick up at brunch spots downtown. That said, it ain’t exactly cheap. Two entrees, a diet coke, and a coffee ran me $30. That’s a bit steep for Hermitage, but I don’t mind shelling it out every now and then….especially when I remember the last midtown brunch I had that cost me $60 for two people *rolls eyes*.

Atmosphere: 6.3/10 – Service was a little slow, and we did have to wait quite awhile, but it was a Saturday morning so that’s to be expected. If you want a quick in-and-out stop, this ain’t your place. But, if you have time to spare, it’s worth it. Quarters are close, so it can get a little loud in there, but the location is so convenient, you’re happy to sacrifice the space and peace. Plus, if you catch ’em at the right time, it ain’t so crowded. I actually mentioned Saturday morning, “I wanna come drink here one night.” Seems like a fun place to watch some football on Saturday morning, too.

Overall: 6.725/10 – If you’re the type that’s bothered by crowds, it’s all about picking your spot here. Peak breakfast hours are going to be nuts, but I’ve been to Nadeen’s late in the afternoon and gotten a table just fine. But, let’s face it – you go to Nadeen’s for the food. It’s one of the best spots in Hermitage for their down-home Southern cooking and generous portions. I’ve yet to find a dish unsatisfying. Make it one of your Hermitage mainstays.
