Alright, ladies and gentlemen – Spooky Season is approaching its end. The “big day,” if you will, will be here in a matter of a couple of days, and so will conclude another year of fun #SpookySZN coverage here on SoBros Network. We didn’t do this last year, so I thought 2019 would be a good year to revisit our collective list of the best Halloween movies in existence.
To decide this very important list, I reached out to the SoBros family and asked everyone to provide their 5-10 favorite movies to watch during the Halloween season. I assigned a point value to each ranking, tallied all the lists up, and the results are listed below.
Enjoy a Halloween movie night on us.
Honorable Mentions: The Haunted Mask, Sleepy Hollow, The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown, The Conjuring, Ernest Scared Stupid, Poltergeist, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Insidious, The Witches, Ginger Snaps, Under Wraps, The Thing, Wolfman, Paranorman, Dawn of the Dead, Halloweentown, The Nightmare Before Christmas
Our Top 10 Halloween Movies (2019)
10. The Addams Family – Weird. We’ve done a few of these lists over the years, and this one has NEVER popped up on one. But, it makes total sense. This is one I’ll have to get back into the rotation to see how it holds up. Thanks, Brittany!
9. Donnie Darko – A big time cult hit that I think is often overlooked when talking about Halloween movies.
8. Monster House – Brandon and I are big Monster House dudes, and both of us had it pretty high on our lists. Personally, I don’t let an October pass without watching it.
7. Ghostbusters – Y’know….it’s weird. I never really thought of Ghostbusters as a Halloween movie, yet every year, I crank that damn theme song on the Halloween playlist. Maybe I should start recognizing it for the Halloween staple it is.
6. Beetlejuice – Happy to see Beetlejuice getting some love – it definitely feels like a very festive Halloween flick.
5. Trick r’ Treat – Brittany and Rooster both had this one high on their lists, and I’m absolutely with it. I love the Halloween movies that are actually about Halloween.
4. The Blair Witch Project – A few people mentioned this one, and had it ranked pretty high on their lists no less. That kind of surprises me. I don’t think of this one as a spooky, festive movie – it’s more psychologically damaging. At least it was for young Stoney and Brandon, who thought that shit was real back in the day.
3. Scream – This one popped up on quite a few lists, right around 3rd or 4th on most of ’em. I never really got it until I read Mose’s piece on horror movies I should see, when he wrote, “the ‘horror rules’ that Stoney would learn from Halloween are absolutely flipped on their heads in Scream. The writing is meta as hell and just makes for a downright fun time, even with all the awful murdering.” That kinda sounds badass.
2. Halloween – I mean, you can’t make a ‘top Halloween movies’ list without having THE Halloween movie, right? Michael Myers is a veritable Halloween icon. To this day, you can’t hear that theme song without getting chills.
1. Hocus Pocus – It only makes sense. This one appeared on almost every SoBros ballot. It ran away at the polls – it is the quintessential Halloween movie. If you haven’t seen it, don’t worry. Freeform is probably going to show it 500 times before Halloween is over.
