Welcome in to the 2019 NFL MVP Watch, where I will be taking a look around the landscape of the MVP race in the NFL this season. This is pretty much the same thing as my Heisman Watch, sooooo…like, do I want to spend a lot of time on an intro?
Shit, I guess I will for the uninitiated – each week, I will count down the five most MVP-worthy performances of the week and offer up my reasoning for each ranking. You finish first, you get five points. Second is four, so on and so forth. I will keep the season point totals going at the bottom of the article and at the end of the season, whoever has the most points gets the 2019 SoBros Network NFL MVP “honors.”
2019 NFL MVP WATCH: WEEK 10
5. Dalvin Cook, Vikings RB – The Vikings have a formula success behind their stud running back in Cook. He gives them the ability to dictate the pace of a game and take some of the pressure of Kirk Cousins. He looked damn near unstoppable at times against Dallas on Sunday. His 991 yards put him atop the NFL in rushing yardage. He could very well secure this season’s rushing title.
4. Minkah Fitzpatrick, Steelers S – Man, that trade with the Dolphins is working out for the Steelers so far. The Steelers are on a four-game winning streak, pushing for a wild card spot in the AFC, and Fitzpatrick’s play has been critical to this defense bowing up. Fitzpatrick has four interceptions, five passes deflected, and a touchdown in the last three games. He’s definitely starting to generate a little ‘Defensive Player of the Year’ buzz.
3. Derrick Henry, Titans RB – Henry was instrumental in the Titans upset of the Kansas City Chiefs, and his 188 yards and two touchdowns led the NFL in rushing this week. It’s crazy to imagine where this team would be without him this season, as he’s been the clear offensive MVP so far. He’s quietly crept up to 5th in the NFL in rushing with 832 yards. He also has 10 total touchdowns in 2019.
2. Lamar Jackson, Ravens QB – Jackson is just absurd. I mean, legit video game numbers, and I don’t even care if that cliché is completely played out in the journalism world today. Against the Bengals, Jackson went 15/17 for 223 yards, three touchdowns, and 65 yards and a score on the ground. He could very well be the most electric player in football today.
1. Russell Wilson, Seahawks QB – Wilson gets the tiebreaker over Jackson this week because of quality of opponent. Week after week, it seems like we’re seeing another miracle performed by Wilson – in taking down the previously undefeated 49ers, Wilson went 24/34 for 232 yards, a touchdown, and a pick. But, it was the magic of getting his team down the field to kick the game-winning field that was most impressive. Wilson has to the be the front runner for NFL MVP right now.
