I don’t know about you guys, but I was beginning to go through some serious MCU withdrawals. I mean, I felt like I needed therapy after Avengers: Endgame. But, to quote the great Michael Scott, “I am definitely ready to be hurt again.” Or something like that. Anyway, my appetite was satiated a bit yesterday when Marvel dropped the first teaser for Black Widow, featuring white suit Black Widow, David Harbour as the Red Guardian, and our first look at Taskmaster.

Love it. I was kinda lukewarm on the idea of a solo Black Widow movie at first. I just like the intrigue surrounding the character – maybe we aren’t supposed to know her origin story, y’know? But, after seeing some of the casting announcements and reading some of the rumors about the villain (which turned out to be true), and then seeing the first teaser, I’m all in. LFG.
Chubby David Harbour with a Russian accent? Sold. White outfit Black Widow? Genius – a WHOLE new line of toys to market. Big brain, Marvel, big brain. Except, I just can’t shake this feeling about the Taskmaster….based on the quick glimpse we got, I can’t help but feel a little underwhelming…
For those who didn’t catch in the trailer and/or are unfamiliar with the character from the comics, here’s a screen grab side-by-side:

I’m not saying you put a cape on the guy and go full on skeleton mask, but this looks just a tad bland. I mean, Taskmaster went toe to toe with The Avengers. He’s one of the most skilled hand-to-hand combatants in the entire Marvel universe. Dude is a badass, and y’all made him look like one of the Putty Patrol.
It looks like he’s about to go enjoy a vigorous round of paintball or motocross or something.
Look, I have all the trust in the world in Marvel to get this right. They’ve really hit their stride as storytellers in these last several movies. They took a virtually unknown property in Guardians of the Galaxy and made it a hit. They told a decade-long story with a massive payoff. I’m sure it’ll be fine. But, like I said…I’m a little “meh” for now.
Black Widow hits theaters May 1, 2020.
