College Football Accountability Post 2019: What I Got Wrong

"Big Natural" Stoney Keeley owns up to all of the things he got wrong when predicting the 2019 college football season.

This college football season was one for the ages. You had a truly historic march from the LSU Tigers – undefeated, SEC Championship, Heisman Trophy, National Championship. Some interesting turnover in the SEC. What looked like an all-time great Ohio State Buckeyes team that was surprisingly upended by the Clemson Tigers. Speaking of tigers, the Memphis Tigers were a hell of a story. Not to mention, the ascension of programs like the Baylor Bears and the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

All in all, another fun year in the college football game. So, I’m here

In this game, a lot of people are out there making predictions left and right. As an analyst, you always run the risk of looking like a complete and total ass, but that’s the price you pay to play the game. For me, I’m big on transparency. So, I’m willing to look back and laugh at some of the stupid college football takes I had.

What I Got Wrong in 2019

Michigan would win the Big Ten – They had ’em right where they wanted ’em! This was supposed to be the year that everything came together for the Wolverines. Ohio State was going to take a step back, and Jim Harbaugh was going to swoop in for the kill! Hell, this might even be a playoff team! All things I said back in August, but the Wisconsin Badgers would have something to say about it. They let us know real quick that this Michigan team really wasn’t shit.

Missouri would disrupt the SEC East – This was the other “bold” preseason prediction I made. I never thought they’d win their appeal and be bowl eligible, but with the addition of Kelly Bryant and (thinking they’d have) a giant chip on their shoulder, I thought they’d rise up and beat either Florida or Georgia. Nope – they lost the season opener TO WYOMING. Then, they lost to Vanderbilt. SMDH.

Notre Dame was a playoff contender – I’m sorry to bring this one up, Mose. I really am. But, if you guys listened to the College Football Roundup at all this season, you should know how dead serious I was about this. Even AFTER the loss to Georgia, I still thought this team was going to make a run. We’re all STILL trying to figure out just what the hell happened on that road trip to Michigan.

Alabama would be fine without Tua Tagovailoa – All they had to do was beat Auburn, right? Then, they’d be in the College Football Playoff, Nick Saban would have a month to prepare, and given how well they played LSU, they might have a real shot! I was screaming at my monitor, thinking people had forgotten how highly recruited Mac Jones was and what a talented prospect he was. Give the guy some credit! He’s not exactly chopped liver! As it turned out, losing a once-in-a-generation quarterback DOES in fact have an effect on a team. My bad. Sorry for partying.

Alright, that’s it. Let’s all try and do better to hold ourselves accountable for stuff we get wrong. I’m not proud of it, but hey – this is what it’s all about, baby. Trust and accountability. And yeah, maybe I can provide a few laughs by thinking Tua Tagovailoa’s absence wouldn’t provide a huge drop off in play. FMLROLLTIDE.
