It’s January. Here in Nashville, it hasn’t been too bad for the most part, but we’re due our annual week or so of extremely cold weather at any moment. For most of y’all, this is the brutal part of the winter. Snow storms, record lows, howling winds, and chapped lips all over the country. I’m not trying to rub it in – I’m just trying to set the tone for this piece. I love the cold (at least for a little bit). It means I get to watch my favorite cold weather movies and soak in the season. I reached out to the SoBros Network team to see what they mentioned among their favorites to watch during winter. Together, we came up with quite the list.
The Best Cold Weather Movies
The Hateful Eight – The number one choice for me is Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight. Every year, this is the one movie that I wait for a really cold night (hopefully, it’s snowing, but that’s not always a given in Nashville), I hunker down, and I enjoy as if I’m stranded in three feet of snow in the woods somewhere. Something about the sound of this movie just exudes the guttural brutality of the winter cold. Ice in mens’ beard. Hot coffee on the stove. Y’all, it doesn’t get more ‘winter’ than this one.
The Revenant – You want to talk about a movie that captures the spirit of being in the elements, hot damn – I don’t know that there’s a better choice. I’m cold just thinking about Hugh Glass traversing the frozen tundra and getting mauled by a damn bear.
The Grey – Man vs. wolf in the snowy wilderness? Sign me up. This is one that Brandon mentioned when we started to group chat about our favorite cold weather movies. I loved the raw, unforgiving nature of this film…which…I mean, should be expected when you’re talking about literally fighting wolves in the cold.
The Shining – Maaaaaaybe don’t watch this one if you’re feeling particularly lonely or if you’ve got a bit of cabin fever from being cooped up in the house for too long. But, it’s hard not to mention a movie about people who venture out to an isolated hotel covered in snow. We’ll just try and forget about all of the ghost shit.
Others earning mentions:
- Red Dawn
- Fargo
- The Thing
- Misery
- Snowpiercer
- Cold Mountain
- Cool Runnings
- RENT
- Day After Tomorrow
- Smallfoot
- Coach Carter
PS. A justification of Smallfoot: I watched this one with the young niece and nephew when it was brutally cold in New Jersey last year. So, yeah – make fun of me if you want. But, how do you feel now? I have special family memories tied to a not-that-good movie that actually makes it better. Suck it.
