Nashville Reviews: Firecracker Hot Chicken

"Big Natural" Stoney Keeley ventured out to the Davidson-Wilson county line to try the hot chicken and Chinese food crossover at Firecracker Hot Chicken.

A couple of days ago, Cadbury calls me up. Brandon had stopped by. It was a holiday, so none of us were doing shit, and we just decided to kill a couple of hours hanging out and watching Forrest Gump. You guys know me by now, though (maybe – that could’ve been a reach). I couldn’t waste the perfect opportunity to stop by Firecracker Hot Chicken in Old Hickory to get an official review up on the old SoBros Network. #Content 4 life, y’all.

For those of you who might not know, Firecracker is known for combining the realms of hot chicken and Chinese food. You can get sesame chicken just as easily as you can get the hot chicken. They have a pretty hearty menu that also includes catfish and chicken & waffles. If you’re like me, this is pretty much the only restaurant you need in your life.

Flavor: 2/10 – In terms of flavor, I’d put this hot chicken in the same lowly category as Party Fowl. Just a lot of “blind” heat, if you will, but not a whole hell of a lot beyond that. I like a good complex savory and saucy flavor in my hot chicken. Firecracker just doesn’t have that (at least in the chicken….the fried rice was wonderful).

Texture: 7.5/10 – I was surprised and impressed by how good the actual quality of the chicken was. If it wasn’t so good, Firecracker is not getting such a high score. But, it was thick, cooked well, and juicy. It was made fresh, and quite frankly, is one of the best chicken tenders I’ve ever had in the area from that sort of quality standpoint. This was undoubtedly the redeeming quality of this chicken.

Heat: 7/10 – The heat was there. I felt a little tingle in the back of my throat. Like Cadbury mentioned in the video, I don’t think if you’re a hardcore fan of hot chicken, you’ll be that challenged with this. But, if this was the first hot chicken you ever had, I think you’d feel pretty intimidated by the heat. A nice comfortable burn that won’t sacrifice flavor (because there hardly is any flavor).

Fixins: 5.5/10 – Forget your french fries, mac and cheese, and cole slaw. Firecracker is going to load you up with some of the best fried rice this side of town. It sounds odd to go get General Tso’s with a hot chicken tender combo, but folks – I’m here to say…the combination works pretty damn well.

Overall: 5.5/10 – Two things can be true, folks – I can absolutely love this meal -AND- I can acknowledge that it is completely average Nashville hot chicken. High marks for the quality of the cut itself, how juicy the chicken is, and how freshly prepared it was. But, in terms of flavor, it’s behind all of the Nashville mainstays. That said, it made for a nice, comforting meal on a cold day. The fried rice is definitely the move to make, and I found it all highly satisfying. Go ’cause you’re hungry as hell…not because you’re in search of the best hot chicken in town.

Current Nashville Hot Chicken Power Rankings

  1. Scoreboard (6.62/10)
  2. Riverfront Tavern (6.25/10)
  3. Helen’s Hot Chicken (5.75/10)
  4. Firecracker Hot Chicken (5.5/10)
  5. PDK Kitchen (5.13/10)

Important qualifier: I’ve literally only reviewed six places around town. Don’t @ me with the “where’s Hattie B’s? Where’s Bolton’s? Where’s Prince’s?” I KNOW – we’re working on getting out to the heavyweights in the Nashville hot chicken scene this year. This portfolio has to start somewhere, and right now, it’s starting east of town because that’s the easiest for me to get to. *shrugs*
