Yep – definitely should’ve gotten this out last week, but give me a break. I’m just getting back into the swing of things when it comes to the content game. Anyway, I am here today to offer up a preview of things to come this month on the big screen. Let’s review the big theatrical releases for January 2020.
Theatrical Releases: January 2020
January 3
The Grudge – Another recast and reboot (man, seems like we were just talking about this…). This time, it’s the horror classic from 2004 about a ghost who kills everyone that enters a house that gets the makeover…which…oddly enough, was initially a makeover of the Japanese flick, Ju-on: The Grudge.
January 10
1917 (Nationwide) – 1917 gets the wide release on January 10th, and from what our guy Brandon Vick said, this impossible World War I drama is not one to miss. It drew the elusive 5/5 #VicksFlicks rating.
Just Mercy (Nationwide) – With a star-studded cast that features Michael B. Jordan, Brie Larson, and Jamie Foxx, the legal/political/social injustice drama Just Mercy looks sure to deliver. It’s based off of famed defense attorney Bryan Stevenson and his venture into Alabama to defend those wrongfully accused.
Like A Boss – Rose Byrne, Tiffany Haddish, and Salma Hayek headline this comedy about a couple of friends who start a company together, only to sell it off in a deal that both immediately regret.
Underwater – Kristen Stewart is back for this *ahem*…underwater….thriller about a group of scientists stranded deep in the ocean during an earthquake. It’s a whole helluva lot of NOPE if you’re terrified of the ocean like I am.
January 17
Bad Boys for Life – Action, comedy, and high stakes – Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are back for what is supposed to be one last run in the Bad Boys franchise.
Dolittle – Maybe the big moneymaker for the month, Robert Downey, Jr. and Tom Holland headline an absolutely stacked cast (too stacked to even name in a two-sentence preview) in a reboot of the classic tale of the physician that can talk to animals.
January 24
The Gentlemen – Guy Ritchie’s latest stylistic criminal flick is oozing with classic machismo with Matthew McConaughey and Charlie Hunnam starring.
The Turning – If you love mystery, horror, and creepy kids, The Turning just may be for you. It’s based off of the 1898 ghost story The Turn of the Screw by Henry James.
January 31
The Rhythm Section – Blake Lively and Jude Law star in this thriller about a woman seeking revenge after discovering a plane crash that killed her family wasn’t quite the accident it was initially thought to be.
