The first thing you learn about the best journalists is that they just report on pure speculation. Sometimes, they don’t even need facts. Titans Twitter seems to be debating the merits of adding Tom Brady as the new quarterback of the Tennessee Titans.
Brady’s contract is up, he’s expressed an openness to leaving the New England Patriots, and a lot of people are making the (albeit logical) connections between he and the Titans. So, as a credible Titans journalist, I figured…“guess I’ll just weigh in on this, too…” What’s one more opinion floating around in the world going to hurt?
And, folks – my opinion is…”meh.”
I don’t really care. People seem to be romanticizing the idea of Brady in two-tone blue as if he’s still the same guy he was years ago. That ain’t it. Many of y’all are saying, “well he threw for 4,057 yards with NO weapons on offense.” First of all, Julian Edelman was a thousand-yard receiver in 2019. Second of all, his passing yard total was good for 7th in the NFL. Besides, how are we going to measure a quarterback by passing yards?
If that’s all you have to make a case for signing Brady, that’s weak as hell. Are you saying that Jameis Winston, Dak Prescott, and Jared Goff are the best quarterbacks in football right now? Because that’s your top three in passing yardage for 2019.
But, let’s entertain this idea about stats – Brady’s 88 passer rating was 18th in the NFL (tied with Jacoby Brissett….Jacoby Brissett!) His 24 touchdowns put him at 13th in the league. Let’s be real – this man isn’t what he used to be. Last year, the Pats won the Super Bowl because they got the run game going in the postseason. Yes, Brady needs some upgrades at receiver and tight end….but let’s not act like he’s not slowing down.
Ryan Tannehill had 2,598 yards in the 10 games he started (2,742 on the season). You project that out over the course of 16 games, and it’s 4,156 yards (that would’ve put him at 6th in the NFL)
How many times have you heard the cliché – the NFL is about “what have you done for me lately?”
Lately, Tannehill has been better than Brady.
Maybe this season was an aberration for Brady, and that’s what you’d have to be banking on if you’re Jon Robinson. But, do you want to take that chance? What changes do you have to make to the offense for Brady? Do you throw off the chemistry of the offense – one that worked really fuckin’ well with Tannehill at the helm – for what will likely be just one season?
IF Tannehill decides to take his talents elsewhere, then yeah, sure. Bring in Brady. But, I think you’re playing with fire if you break up the nucleus of the offense we just saw in 2019 for a guy who’s very clearly in decline.
You’re trippin’ if you think the missing ingredient to get this Titans team to a Super Bowl is Tom Brady.
And, yes – for those of you who aren’t too familiar with me and my work and might not have heard me say it clearly before, I do think Brady is the greatest quarterback of all time. Nothing but respect – but Nashville ain’t the fit.
