The Super Bowl’s in the books. I’m sure Kansas City (Kansas and/or Missouri) is still taking in the moment, but for a lot of other NFL markets, the conversation is already shifting to 2020. Along with that comes all of the “way-too-early” gimmicks – columns, predictions, the odds for next season are out. People are speculating wildly about free agency. So on and so forth. But, everywhere I look, it seems someone is disrespecting Ryan Tannehill and the work he put in for the Tennessee Titans this season. That is whack.
Don’t get me wrong – the postseason run that Derrick Henry was otherworldly. It was impressive and that dude is going to parlay that into a MASSIVE contract. Homeboy’s fixin’ to get P A I D. But, it’s like these talking heads didn’t watch the Titans all season at all.
The Titans offense, prior to the playoffs, could score points with anyone. They averaged 30.4 points per game in the 10 games since Tannehill took over in the regular season. He averaged 259.8 passing yards per game, threw 22 touchdowns (with four more on the ground), and just five interceptions in those 10 games. In five of those games, he had at least three total touchdowns. Not to mention, he was the highest rated passer in the NFL during the regular season. They voted him the Comeback Player of the Year for it! Forget that – if he had played the whole season and put up those kinds of numbers consistently, Ryan Tannehill would’ve been in the league MVP discussion. Let that sink in.
He looks like the perfect quarterback for this system, and if Mike Vrabel and company didn’t make the switch from Marcus Mariota to Tannehill, the Titans don’t make the AFC Championship. Shit, the way that team looked during the 2-4 start, the Titans would be picking in the top 5-10 of the NFL Draft this year.
I specifically saw, “Ryan Tannehill isn’t going to scare anyone at quarterback” somewhere. Wish I could remember the source – I usually like that stuff on Twitter so I can circle back to it when it’s time to actually put pen to paper, but I slipped up this time, guys. My bad. And, I even see some Titans fans on Twitter clamoring for Tom Brady. Hard pass for me. I just have one question for all of you who are doubting Tannehill….
WHAT TITANS TEAM DID Y’ALL WATCH IN 2019?!?!?!? Did y’all give up after the Denver Broncos game? Shit.
Sure, Tannehill’s going to come back down to Earth a bit. He played the best football of his entire career in 2019, and it’d be unrealistic to expect him to maintain that over an extended period of time. But, this offense just flat out works with the guy. Get another speed guy on offense. Get a running back that can spell Henry from time to time. Draft a guy you can develop to take over at quarterback in a few years. Watch this offense continue to roll. Tannehill is the guy, and I don’t want anyone else at quarterback to start the 2020 campaign.
I’ll say this – if the San Francisco 49ers had Tannehill, I think they win the Super Bowl. Boom – hot takes this morning.
