I’m Okay With the Jerry Jeudy-Odell Beckham Jr. Comparison

The former Alabama Crimson Tide receiver Jerry Jeudy is starting to draw some lofty comparisons as we approach the 2020 NFL Draft.

What do you think of when you hear the name Jerry Jeudy? I immediately think of the big play. What do you think of when you hear the name Odell Beckham Jr.? Maybe it’s the boat party or the outlandish antics of the superstar wide receiver. But, for me, it’s that iconic one-handed catch that is featured on posters all over the country. Again, it’s the big play that these two guys, on the surface, seem to share. That’s why I don’t mind the comparison made between the two.

PFF kept it simple and compared Jeudy to former LSU standout Odell Beckham Jr., who enters his second season with the Browns after being drafted by the New York Giants in 2014 with the 12th pick in that year’s draft.

There’s apart of me that always groans when people compare guys who haven’t played a down in the NFL to dudes who are absolute studs in the NFL. It’s not really fair to the college player. But, it’s also fair to say that simply being drafted in the top 10 of the NFL Draft brings about a certain pressure of its own.

I love Jeudy’s game, though.

He is fast and has proven to be one of the best route runners in all of college footballs. There’s something that is tight and sound about the way he runs a route. And, even if defenders can hang with him, he’s incredibly slippery. He converts catches into touchdowns. Everything about this dude’s game SCREAMS “big play.”

I can understand the hesitation to put such a lofty comparison on the guy. Everyone’s worried about their clout. Don’t want to be the person that calls an eventual bust the next OBJ. But, shit y’all…put on the tape. A lot of what Jeudy does well is stuff that Beckham has become famous for.

Jerry Jeudy could very easily be the best receiver in this class. If he lands in the right situation, he could become the next great Alabama wide receiver to translate into an outright force in the NFL. If he reaches his potential, this guy could be an all-timer.
