Titans Draft Roundup: Clowney Watch and Establishing Needs

Clowney Watch 2020 is well underway, and for the Tennessee Titans, getting some pass rush help is of paramount importance this offseason.

Welcome to the weekly Tennessee Titans draft roundup for the 2020 NFL Draft. Over the course of the next several weeks, I’ll be releasing this column once a week with my very professional journalism opinions. You’ll find everything from rumors to wild speculation to actual analysis (sometimes). Titan up!

*ALRIIIIGHT! We’re back, baby! It’s another year of the Titans Draft Roundup. Over the course of the next few weeks, I’ll do my best to aggregate news and notes surrounding the Tennessee Titans and the NFL Draft and mix in a bit of my own thoughts. LFG!

*Clowney Watch 2020 is officially underway. While the Titans did sign Vic Beasley to a one-year deal, we’re still awaiting that big Jadeveon Clowney-sized domino to fall. Rumors are flying left and right – one minute, he’s leaning Titans, the next he’s committing to the Seattle Seahawks. It’s crazy, but Clowney Watch might have an impact on the first round of the NFL Draft for whichever team he ends up on.

I’m working on my official “Titans draft needs” piece later this week, but as it stands, some pass rush help is still the team’s biggest need heading into the draft. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like this is the year to be looking for an elite level prospect at that position. It’s Chase Young and then everyone else. So, even if the Titans don’t land Clowney, I would not be surprised to see them pass on an edge rusher at #29 rather than take one just for the sake of taking one.

*A lot of folks have offensive tackle listed as a dire need for this team since they let Jack Conklin walk. I don’t see it that way. They’re perfectly comfortable trotting out Dennis Kelly at right tackle. Could they use some depth? Sure. But, I think they’re happy enough with what they have that it won’t be a must-draft position at #29. If they end up with a tackle there, it’ll be because they’re going best player available.

*John Lowell wrote a nice little piece for Titan Sized about TCU WR Jalen Raegor. The Titans are in a position where they truly can just build depth and take the best player available when it’s their turn to pick. So, I’m tellin’ y’all…don’t be surprised with anything they do. I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility at all for them to stockpile weapons and take a receiver in the first round. Raegor is a fast, explosive receiver that would add a dynamic to this Titans receiving corps that it currently lacks.

*The Titans did sign DT Jack Crawford yesterday, though I’d imagine this is little more than a depth move behind Jeffery Simmons and DaQuan Jones. Crawford most recently played for the Atlanta Falcons.

*As it stands, the Titans currently have picks in the 2020 NFL Draft:

  • 1st round, 29th overall
  • 2nd round, 61st overall
  • 3rd round, 93rd overall
  • 5th round, 174th overall
  • 7th round, 224th overall
  • 7th round, 243rd overall

See y’all next week!
