The first Madagascar is good and believe it or not, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa is just as good, if not better. The animated sequel starts off where the first one ended. The gang is leaving Madagascar for New York Zoo. Though due to those penguins and a lump of crap plane, they end up in Africa. Back to their roots.

Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett Smith, and David Schwimmer are all back for this one. And thankfully the movie sticks to its humor and has many funny parts. There are sub-plots that involve each character. Stiller’s lion is dealing with his father (Bernie Mac) and earning respect. Rock’s zebra appreciates being unique but is not different from the rest of his zebra pack. And there’s romance blooming between Schwimmer’s giraffe and Smith’s hippo.

There are those animated movies that can appeal to adults and children, and this Dreamworks hit has no problem achieving just that. Everyone can go and enjoy – no matter how old you are. Of course, the animation is amazing, but so are the characters and the story of friendship and family. And to make a successful and satisfying sequel can be tough. Yet, directors Tom McGrath and Eric Darnell, along with their crew of terrific animators, have done just that.
