Day 2 Players Available for the Titans

Stoney Keeley identifies some Day 2 prospects he likes for the Tennessee Titans in the 2020 NFL Draft.

I can’t say I’m too enthused about picking an offensive tackle at #29 with some of my favorite cornerback prospects still on the board, and a need for some speed in the secondary. That’s not meant to be a knock on Isaiah Wilson – I love the kid’s size, his nasty demeanor in finishing blocks, and his potential as a run-blocker for Derrick Henry. But does he fix the Titans in a way that a speedy corner would have? I don’t know – and because of that, I’m not sure about the value of the pick. Wilson seems like a luxury when other areas of the roster had a greater need. Nonetheless, there’s still the ENTIRE rest of the 2020 NFL Draft to get through, so let’s see how this whole thing plays out. Here are some players that are still available heading into Day 2 of the draft that I think make sense for the Tennessee Titans.

Cornerback

I still say cornerback is the biggest need for the Titans moving forward. They have the 61st and 93rd overall picks, so I’m concerned about the Titans missing out one of these guys if there’s a run on corners. But, hey – in J-Rob we trust, right?

Kristian Fulton – The fact that Fulton didn’t go in the first round is shocking. I like Fulton’s size and speed, but he needs to work on hanging with savvy route-runners. There’s plenty of those in the NFL.

Jaylon Johnson – I would’ve been okay with Johnson in Round 1. He’s more of a press cover guy with good ball skills, but hey – you don’t always have to run with receivers if you can make ’em uncomfortable and jam them out of rhythm.

Amik Robertson – Big time attitude guy with excellent route recognition skills, solid footwork, and a physical style. Robertson ain’t afraid of anybody.

Wide Receiver

I still want another play-maker in this Titans passing game. Just give this unit some teeth like its never had before. You got your quarterback. You got your back and o-line. Go grab another dude that defenses legitimately have to worry about.

Tee Higgins – No way Higgins is there at #61, but man…how about it? I love a guy that’s going to go to war for the ball. The Titans could use another red zone threat.

Michael Pittman Jr. – I have to admit. A lot of Titans guys have mentioned Pittman, but I’m guilty of lumping him into that ‘possession receiver’ category, and that’s not at all what the Titans need. I think of him as a Tajae Sharpe replacement, and I don’t think you invest a 2nd or 3rd round pick on that. That said, I figured I’d mention him here because a lot of other people like him.

KJ Hamler – I love the explosive speed and versatility that Hamler would bring to the Titans receiving corps. Line him up all over the field and stretch that defense, baby. Would absolutely love the pick.

Chase Claypool – Another guy that has the speed and versatility to do it all (including special teams). What I like most about Claypool is his size and polish. He would be a welcome addition to the Titans offense.

Edge Rusher

AJ Epenesa – I don’t think he’s really a fit for the Titans. Epenesa would be best served in a defense where he can just line up at the line of scrimmage and push the pocket around. But, he’s still on the board, and if the Titans aren’t going to get Clowney, Epenesa would effect games in the same manner.

Jonathan Greenard – I’m not going to be surprised at all to see Greenard end up in two-tone blue before this night’s over with. The Titans have been sniffing around, and guys with the makeup of Greenard seem like big time JRob guys – intelligent, athletic, defends the run, defends the pass, and tough, tough, tough.

Zack Baun – I like Baun a lot for the Titans because of his particular skill set and scheme versatility. I highly doubt he’s there at #61, though.

Terrell Lewis – Lewis has the exact skill set the Titans could use as an insurance policy should Vic Beasley not pan out. You worry about the injury history, but the level of investment lowers with each round’s passing. If he hits his ceiling, you’ve got a damn good pass rusher.

Running back

The Titans offense was completely different when Henry came off the field. They could use a good complementary back – something they thought Dion Lewis (who is now with the New York Giants) would be. Regardless, they could use another horse in the stable. Imagine how this team would punish defenses in the 4th quarter if there wasn’t much of a dip off at running back when Henry came off the field.

D’Andre Swift – Imagine a backfield of Derrick Henry and D’Andre Swift. Are you kidding me?

Jonathan Taylor – JRob and company like winners and pedigrees. Though he never took home the Heisman, he was a regular finalist at Wisconsin. He’s got a hell of skillset and could end up being the best back to come out of this class.

Zack Moss – An all-around good, productive back at Utah, the Titans have been sniffing around Moss a bit throughout this process.

Defensive Line

I love the potential of a Jeffery SimmonsDaQuan JonesIsaiah Mack defensive line, but the Titans need to add bodies along the line after trading one of the all-time great Titans, Jurrell Casey, to the Denver Broncos.

Marlon Davidson – Good defensive tackle with a starting pedigree in college, good feet, scheme diversity, and has a pretty decent pass rush toolbox as a defensive lineman. Would instantly add another hoss in the rotation.

Ross Blacklock – Elite level pass rusher from the defensive tackle position with excellent quickness and change-of-direction ability. He ain’t gonna stuff the run, but he’s an excellent option to agitate opposing quarterbacks.

Probably Day 3 options, but if you like ’em, you like ’em

  • James Lynch, DT Baylor
  • Troy Pride Jr., CB Notre Dame
  • Jauan Jennings, WR Tennessee
  • Bradlee Anae, EDGE Utah
  • Raekwon Davis, DL Alabama
