Today’s selection is another personal favorite of mine that I stumbled upon when I was still at ETSU. Bone Tomahawk is an absolute gem if you can handle the disgustingly awesome gore we get along the way. Now, this is another film that I think you should know the least about going into.
The basic plot comes down to a tribe of cannibals kidnapping a couple of people from this small town, leading to the sheriff leading a group for a search and rescue. A few things set this tale off including the graphic violence and a cast highlighted by Kurt Russell as the tough as nails Sheriff Hunt. Coming along in the rescue mission is Patrick Wilson, whose character has a personal stake in the voyage, and Matthew Fox as a dapper gunslinger that goes by the name Brooder. The final man tagging along is Richard Jenkins as the ‘deputy in reserve’ Chicory.
Most of you will know Jenkins as Dr. Robert Doback from Step Brothers and he does bring some levity as the slightly dim-witted but very well meaning Chicory. This may be my favorite performance of the entire film, though I’m always game for BAMF Kurt Russell. Also featured is one of the final feature film performances of Sid Haig, who has a bit of an extended cameo.
As mentioned the film is pretty brutal at times, but that should be expected coming from writer/director S. Craig Zahler. His other films include Brawl in Cell Block 99 and Dragged Across Concrete, which are also very grisly, bleak films that I thoroughly enjoyed. Zahler also composed the score in this, and his other films, which has to get some love. At times, the score of Bone Tomahawk brings the feel of the horror film it is at its core. If you enjoyed playing the Red Dead Redemption zombie expansion, then stop what you’re doing and check this out immediately.
Bone Tomahawk is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video!
