Welcome to the weekly Tennessee Titans draft roundup for the 2020 NFL Draft. Over the course of the next several weeks, I’ll be releasing this column once a week with my very professional journalism opinions. You’ll find everything from rumors to wild speculation to actual analysis (sometimes). Titan up!
*Okay, first of all if you aren’t watching Draft Day, starring Kevin Costner, this morning, then can you really call yourself a football fan?
*My how things can change in a year. This time last year, the SoBros team was hopping in a Lyft from my apartment in Hermitage and heading down to Nissan Stadium for the NFL Draft festivities. Eating at the food trucks, getting our picture taken with the Lombardi Trophy. Slingin’ back beers downtown before the NFL Draft. Times were much more carefree. I know it’s going to be a long time before we get back to that level of normal, but I can’t wait for the draft to come back to Nashville.
*Final prediction: Jeff Gladney or a wide receiver. Cornerback is the top need remaining for this team, and that’s going to be amplified if Logan Ryan does end up signing with the New York Jets (or elsewhere, for that matter). But, there’s probably going to be run on corners in the first round, and if Gladney or Jaylon Johnson aren’t still there at the end of the round, I don’t expect J-Rob to reach for one. The Titans need another explosive play-maker, so I could see Jalen Raegor as an option as well.
*Since writing about the running backs in this draft earlier this week, I have worked myself up over Clyde Edwards-Helaire. That guy is exactly what the Titans need in their backfield alongside Derrick Henry. Spending #29 on him might be a bit much, but if he’s still there in Round 2, I say jump all over it.
*The more I think about it, the more I think the Titans are going to pass on actually drafting a quarterback. I know I’ve been banging the drum for the quarterback of the future all offseason so far, but I’m just reading the tea leaves here, and I think this regime is going to give Logan Woodside every conceivable chance to win the backup job. That might mean bringing in a veteran instead of drafting one. What is Charlie Whitehurst doing these days?
*We haven’t talked about tight end a whole lot – I think they have a more than capable stable of Jonnu Smith, Anthony Firkser, and MyCole Pruitt. That doesn’t exactly strike me as a position of need. An awful lot of Titans fans mocked Jared Pinkney to the Titans in Jim Wyatt’s fan mock mailbag. I like Pinkney, but I think there’s a lot of homerism going on from Vandy fans. He ain’t gonna be there in Round 7 either. If you’re going tight end at all, just so I can get my thots on the record, give me Thaddeus Moss.
*As it stands, the Titans currently have picks in the 2020 NFL Draft:
- 1st round, 29th overall
- 2nd round, 61st overall
- 3rd round, 93rd overall
- 5th round, 174th overall
- 7th round, 224th overall
- 7th round, 243rd overall
Happy DRAFT DAY!
